Vet has called twice to let me know how he's doing (very good). How's that for wonderful? She even emailed me a picture of the bad tooth taken during the surgery. Technology!

He's so cute! Hope he feels better soon. I adopted a dog from the pound who was fairly neglected and had awful breath. I got her teeth cleaned and they had to pull about 8 teeth, but the breath improved and she felt much better. Dogs are pretty resilient.

Sleeper, the vet told me sometimes dogs come in with horrible, painful dental issues, yet the owners say the dog feels fine, acts fine, eats well. Really?? Sometimes dogs just don't show pain. Eight teeth is a lot!

I'm really surprised at this dental work because I brush his teeth every day trying to avoid this. Oh well!

Love the name Oski and he is such a cutie I just want to reach through the monitor and hug him. Hoping the dental surgery went well. My little ShihTzu loves finding plastic bottle caps too. Hubby sometimes drops them on the floor thinking they've hit the trash can. I'll be watching her even more closely now.

so wish i had noticed my kitty's mouth...she was slowing down (age) but it was her teeth that really put her down, sigh....

My dog is 13, normal,lifespan for her breed, Wheaten Terrier is 10 to 12 years, so I know we are on borrowed time. She wasn't having any obvious problems but had terrible bad breath. Vet took her in immediately, sedated her did a thorough cleaning and gum surgery, plus 13 teeth removed. Ten days of painkillers and antibiotics followed. Molly has been fine since. Vet says she may be around three more years. Recent blood tests done are all normal. I know I am very fortunate! And I do love Westies- my husband had one when we met, so did both his sisters later on. In fact, one sister just got a Westie puppy.Good lick, Oski!

I'm glad you boy is on the mend. We have a local rescue with a staff of volunteer vets who perform low cost spay, dental, microchipping and minor vet services for the community. I used them to spay and neuter all of our animals. I also took my Lab there for a dental cleaning and was shocked at how inexpensive it was compared to her vet. (99.00 + 15.00 for each tooth extraction). Not only did I save hundreds in costs, but every time I've been there, the quality of care they've given has been amazing.

Thanks everyone for all the comments and good wishes. Oski came home around 7 p.m., shaky and tired but hungry so I didn't have any trouble getting his meds dispensed. He's sleeping in this morning!

Lukki, you are "lucky" to have the low-cost group serving your community. Yes, you got a deal on the dental work.

Vicsgal, good to hear your terrier is doing well and that he got the dental care needed. His mouth must have really hurt after 13 teeth out! I wonder if he can eat kibble now or just soft foods.

As you know, we've had four Westies (one at a time) throughout our marriage (50 years).

Charlie died of tongue cancer at nine -- I'm certain from a lesion that happened when he saved my diamond ring from going down the drain during a bath -- and urrped up two weeks later. The resulting lesion was only discovered when I took him in for dental work years later.

Rosie came to us too old to take to training. She was an escape artist and was eventually killed on a highway between our house and a shopping mall as we chased after her.

Pip was the prize winner in conformation, and as loving as Charlie. We spent a fortune on his skin troubles, but he finally grew out of them at about ten and lived well (deaf and blind) until just before his 17th birthday.

Eliot was from Westie Rescue, not entirely Westie as he *shed*. He had an acid stomach, requiring special canned food for the last five years or so. He developed bleeding warts; was deaf and going blind. We coped until he seemed to become senile and incontinent. He was a loving companion until we had to put him down this spring at 15. His constant 'chewie' was a chip from our bluestone-chip driveway. Any stone I accidentally sucked up into the central vac was immediately replaced by him on the next walk. He'd crunch on this and toss it around in his mouth. An acquired 'taste', eh?

I think we are done now, but it's kind of you to 'share' Oski. Westies are cute...and tough! Sending a tummy-rub to you, Oski!

Chisue, I've thought of you over the last months, knowing you are still missing dear Eliot. It must seem too quiet around the house.

Remember, you replied to me years ago when I asked if Westies were a good breed, back when my son got Oski? I'd love to get a buddy for Oski, but he is truly a lot of work and expense, which I don't mind, but enough is enough!

I enjoyed hearing from you. Seems like you haven't posted a lot recently.
