Cotton candy grapes

Has anyone else seen these in your grocery?

I dislike them, and I feel bad that I do. Everyone else around me is raving about them? I don't think they taste like cotton candy, which is a thing that I enjoy once every couple of years (hockey matches come to mind). They just taste floral to me. Like drinking rose water?

But I have a diminished sense of taste. My sense of smell left sometime long before 2009.

What do you think, if you have tried them? I'm sure their name and my description are not necessarily good representations. No point in offering an opinion if you haven't tried them 😉

I saw them for the first time just yesterday. Costco, and two other grocery stores that we had visited. Thinking of this thread, I skipped buying any even though I was a little curious as to taste.

If I'd been shopping with my father in law, he would have taken a couple and tasted. He always did that in stores, testing with a couple of unwashed grapes was a habit we couldn't correct. He was not going to pay for table grapes, get them home and find they were not to his liking 😁

I have tried them. They were too sweet and super expensive, IMO.

As if grapes needed to be any sweeter! I did try some in a previous year and didn't like them, but I dislike really sweet things.

It can be done but probably not directly. You might have to learn tissue culture which pretty much is learning how to make and keep something sterile. Not too easy. Not impossible. Not worth it for some plant you can buy regardless of the price. i don't think I can do it. But building a sterile glove box would help tremendously. Not so legal things could be done. Cotton candy grape, mandared mandarins, pretty much any "private" plant could be yours. Sumo (dekopon) could have been yours many years ago. The issue of disease could be very bad depending if there are quarantines. And still extremely irresponsible if not. So you'd have to do it indoor in a sealed environment and get tests done for the major diseases. Could be done yourself or tested for professionally depending on the disease. Very risky and very hard to do as an amature. So probably won't be worth the effort. It would be illegal if the plant is patented. Just immoral if it's unpatented but unreleased. It's possible many private plants are not patented. Just private through licensing deals. All in all how dedicated to gardening are you and how badly do you want what you are not "supposed" to have?

I was very surprised to find the Cotton Candy grapes in the store here. I guess I would never have noticed them if it hadn't been for this thread. Of course I had to try one, even though I dislike cotton candy intensely. And sure enough, it was all I could do to keep from spitting it out! If I'd had a napkin or anything handy I would have spit it out! It left the most gosh-awful taste in my mouth! But I can see where kids, or anyone who likes cotton candy, might like them. It was a pretty weird flavor, to me, but taste is subjective. We had the Grapples here a few years ago, too. Personally I didn't much care for them, but I could have eaten them if I had to. Guess no one else liked them either, haven't seen them since. I wish Concord grapes would be available more here. Once in awhile, every few years, the stores might have them for a day or two. I haven't noticed any bitter ones, and I don't know if this will be of help to anyone, but I buy grapes a lot and this is how I tell if they are going to be any good. I never taste them in the store. I don't have to. If you feel a grape and it feels firm, it will be sweeter than those that feel soft. The same is true for cherries. On green grapes, the ones with a slightly yellow cast will be sweeter. Never buy those sealed up where you can't touch them. If you look at the stem end, you can see they aren't as fresh. The one thing I am ultra picky about is food. I don't mind paying for quality but I hate buying something that turns out bad.

I do like them, but I think they go bad faster than others. I did just buy them again (my second time having them), but I don't think they're worth the extra cost or going out of my way to get.

I saw them in the grocery yesterday but didn't sample them. I did sample the green seedless that were on sale and passed -- not very good.

Taste is so subjective -- I grew Concord grapes before and didn't like them, they were too musky (foxy?) for me, but DH really liked them. I gave the vine away to my sister, she loves Concord.

Yeah, I only bought a minute amount and they were on sale. I'm still regretting it :/

I have tried them. I ate a couple and threw the rest out to the wild rabbits. Not sure if they liked them or not.

I bought them by mistake not long ago. I did not care for them. DD said the kiddoes love them frozen.

They are not supposed to taste like cotton candy, which just tastes like sugar, period. It is just a marketing gimmick to market super sweet grapes.

We bought them one time but found the sugar level in them to be too much. It was sickening sweet for fruit, in my opinion. I wont buy them again.

? I was explaining how they might taste if somebody wondered. I was saying they didn't taste like cotton candy regardless of the name ? I didn't buy them thinking they would taste like cotton candy.

I've learned that I can take a taste of one grape and figure out whether or not I want to buy the entire bunch. But I totally did not do that this time. I will continue to do so now that I remember 🫤

I got them from Costco couple days ago. My first taste reaction - at home!- was blech!! Tasted again after being in frig for a bit - I like my grapes very cold & seedless. The second taste was much better. My DH thought they were just ”okay” but he doesn’t like grapes as much as I. Gave a bunch to neighbors who both loved them. I won’t buy again mostly because I like the larger red seedless grapes.

@morz8 - Washington Coast - my mother would also sample grapes in the store before buying! I was appalled because this behavior was very unlike her. It wasn’t so much the unwashed produce that troubled me but more the feeling the free samples were like shoplifting. We don’t sample the candy & nuts in the bulk food sections, right? Same deal in my mind - per grape not a big deal but must add up over time. 😊

KW PNW - really, the tasting of produce was very much like my father in law. He was an immigrant and English not his first language - but he could become loud if I ever became stern at all in a store, or a restaurant. I always had to forewarn the server in a restaurant to not bring a beverage with ice in it, a practice rarely seen in his original country. Not even the table water could have ice. Didn't everyone know that's constipating and why would anyone intentionally constipate themself.....

I miss him but mostly because DH loved him so much. He could be difficult 😊
