Need gift ideas for a two year old girl!

I am clueless about what an active two year old will love. She’s an only child, precocious, but I don’t know much else about her. Any ideas for me? We’re thinking in terms of a tricycle, possibly.

kids are more ready for a tricycle at about 3-4 years old. it takes coordination that most 2 year olds don't have.

google "melissa and doug toys". they have tons of things that are geared toward toddlers. puzzles, shapes toys, adorable pretend cooking utinsils, etc.

Agree regarding Melissa and Doug. We’ve given several items from them to our grandkids.

Also, look at Target for ”Perfectly Cute” dolls and accessories. Our granddaughter was mesmerized with them at 2. She’s 4 now and still loves them.

Do you have any ideas as to what she enjoys? Does she play with a lot of dolls, if so maybe some doll clothes or other accessories. Maybe some fun educational games--either a computer game or just a board game. Stuffed animal Dress up clothes Movie tickets--if she hasn't seen something like Monster's Inc.--?? It's a good idea this year NOT to buy gift cards to specific stores. There's really no way of knowing which ones will still be around in January. I don't think a gift card is really the right way to go for the kind of situation you describe, but if you do feel that's the best choice, get a MALL gift card--that way, it can be used in any store, for clothes, books, music, etc, and all the stores in any given mall are unlikely to go out of business. For kids that age--if you can get an idea of sizes, casual clothes are always good. A winter coat might be needed and appreciated. Girls--maybe a craft kit to make jewelry or something else sparkly, or any bath, body, nail, make-up stuff is generally up their alley. Boys--sporting goods. Books, if you think they'd enjoy them, although picking books for kids you don't know is a challenge. Would you be allowed to buy tickets to a play, concert or sporting event and take them yourself? That would be an awesome gift, but it might not be possible in the situation. Of course, if you can find out what each child's specifically interested in, you'll be home free--much easier, if you can get that info somehow. And thanks for taking an interest and helping someone who surely needs someone who cares.

if u don't want to go the book route, how about a savings bond?? u pay $25 and in 15-20 (i forget which) years its worth $50., i know its doesn't sound like a lot but we did that for our kids since birth. for my oldest it paid half of her college bill in junior year. had the whole family on board and everyone did it when they were too little realize they really didn't "get" anything.. everyone always got them a little something to go with it, so when they we knew they should get presents, they had something to open.. the amounts go as high as $500 i think. did it for every occasion, it really adds up!!! $500 bond, $1,000 in allotted time plus interest if u hold onto them past the mature date....

Agree with the somewhat misplaced emphasis on gifts in our culture. I have never really liked the idea of giving guests gifts or favors at weddings, a custom that has seeped into adult birthday parties, christmas parties and even ordinary dinner parties. I do think that anyone in a position to do so should establish an investment account for their kid and have them read the statements and follow their stocks or mutual funds. Eventually they will appreciate it. We used to say our DD pinches pennies until Lincoln’s face bleeds— I don’t know what’s on a penny now, but she’s still at it. She had many merit scholarships and grants and basically paid for her own education, all three degrees. We contributed in a small way to her living expenses for her undergraduate degree, but once she was working she paid for the second and third without asking us for a dime. Some kids are just made that way. But she never turned down a clothes shopping trip! In her junior year of college I surprised her with a one day trip to the Mall of America. We flew up and back and bought her a new spring and summer wardrobe in a day.

I'll second Melissa and Doug toys.

Two is the perfect age for Little Tikes toys like play kitchens, BBQs, sandboxes and water tables.

If there are interactive museums, amusement parks and zoos geared to younger children in the area they live in, a pair of tickets for the parents, since often 2 year olds get in free, and a book, puzzle or toy matching the theme is a nice gift.

Little kids love play food and kitchen items. I like that Melissa & Doug makes them out of wood, rather than plastic.

All very good suggestions.

It's hard to say, especially since we don't know what she already has...but anything play kitchen related is definitely a good one.

I never saw those Perfectly Cute dolls at Target. When I was looking there were barely any dolls (other than Barbie which I wouldn't give to a 2 yr old). They look wonderful and have clothing - outfits etc. From what I've seen, even though we think of dolls as very basic playthings, they're not so prevalent and seem like a great gift.

Season dependent on where they are, the water table is also a great, many year appealing gift.

Puzzles! My kids had wooden puzzles of the alphabet and number from one to nine. Learn through play!

Another ditto to the Melissa and Doug line.

If you want to actually look at that brand and others locally, try The Toy Place in Five Points on Wellman Ave. It’s a small but magical place to look for children’s toys. And if it hasn’t changed, they gift wrap for free.

What about a balance bike - one of those peddle-free ones. I see alot of those around and the kids seems to really like them.
