Silly little triumph

Today is the first time I can fully make a fist, since the Fourth of July 2023. I'm super excited!!! I figured I'd be permanently disfigured. Whew.

We were coming inside after watching neighbors fireworks, and I tripped, in the dark, going to concrete steps, when I reached forward to catch myself. You guessed it. One finger took the brunt of the fall, the longest. And it was drooping. Sad finger. Only the second time I've broken a bone.

Yay, for a clean slate

Triumph Elm Tree Pruning Question

let us rephrase his OP .... he wants its branching at a higher level... before the canopy develops as it will with an elm ... could he take off the one he suggests.. then put in a big stake.. and pull the other vertical ... tying and retying for a year or two.. to train the tree into a proper vertical ... until the trunk strengthens enough to not need the stake ... elms are not endemic to my area .. but the few pics i have seen.. they are stately trees that have been limbed up 10.. 20.. 30 feet.. before the canopy turn into the typical form ... are you suggesting he can not train this tree into a favorable form .. are you suggesting he should just destroy it .... and go buy one with the proper form.. and never prune it to height???? i have done it on oak and cherry ... why cant it be done on an elm ???? what do you think .. ken

I think that actual unconditional love is a very rare thing - perhaps it doesn't even exist. Could you love a child who had no empathy and was horrible to his wife and children, to a daughter who was self absorbed and stole from you and perhaps others due to an "I want" mentality? Could you love a son who was a rapist or a daughter who beat her children relentlessly? Or, a husband who beat you and/or your children? To a man who seemed not to value you? Who repeatedly had affairs? I think there tend to be conditions to all love relationships and I think that is a very healthy thing. However, for the more average relationship where nobody is perfect but everyone keeps trying, yes there can exist a love between a parent and a child that is unique and wonderful. Keep in mind - not everyone gets to have this, you were a very lucky person. Treasure the love your mother gave you - it's not something that is gone simply because she is no longer alive. It's the gift that remains forever alive. So, it's not something that is gone now but remains in your heart forever. You continue to have that love. I agree with you about a marital situation. I have been married three decades to the same man and we love each other very much but of *course* each of us could dismantle the feelings of love by bad behavior if it lasted for a long enough period of time. This is simply human nature - most of us have limits of what we will accept from another person, and thank God for that. Those who don't, tend to invite physically and emotionally abused existences.

laurience - I live in southeastern New Hampshire (northeastern US coast, I don't expect Canadians to know American geography, especially the puny little states! :-)). The cats are really kind of freaky in person, they're black rubber with glow-in-the-dark eyes and quite disturbing looking in a funny way. I got them from a mail order catalog called Oriental Trading Company along with the bird perched on the pumpkin (which came in a pair but I couldn't figure out what to do with the second one so it's perched on top of my TV LOL) and the temporary tattoos we're giving out to the trick-or-treaters. I could have spent a LOT more money on decorations there, they had a lot of very nifty things, but I had to behave myself this year. alex9179 - DH laughed like crazy when I came back from Walgreens with the bat. It was only $5 and Oriental Trading was out of stock on the nicer bats I wanted, so I figured what the heck. I'll be wanting to trade places with you down there on the Gulf coast come 'round February, when fall color is a distant memory and chipping ice off the windshield is getting very, very old!

I love your kitchen brianadarnell! Your counters turned out great! You must be excited to almost be finished! I put the tall cabinet where it is because the door from the garage opens into that area. I am actually planning on storing things in there that are NOT used on an everyday basis. I moved the ovens down enough so they could be open and the garage door could still open without a crash! (I have two kids who come in and out without checking to see who might behind the door.) Can I ask if the cabinets on the sides of your sink are symmetrical? I know I shouldn't sweat it, but that was one of my reasons for trying to get rid of the 12 inch upper. Rosie-I never thought of that. I do find the area under a sink to be messy and not that useful. Thanks for a great idea!

Congrats 🙂

I sort of know the feeling of triumph (and relief) - it took more than 2 years before I could fully close my pinky finger in a fist after dislocating it when I tripped on a pothole and went down while holding my water bottle.

Falls are awful. Glad you're doing better! I fell in April, tore my rotator cuff. Finally got an steroid injection for the pain about 5 weeks ago. Feeling great. Then today was out and went to Home Goods, found a new small saucepan and after carrying it with that arm, my shoulder started bothering me again. I have a follow up next Friday and was going to cancel but now I may not.

Glad it was only temporary. You must have been working to get it limber again. It is a victory to regain movement that was lost !

Broken bones can take longer than you expect, and I'm glad you recovered well. Finger bones can take just as long as other bones.

Can you make a fist with your foot - i.e., bend your toes around the end of your foot?

This guy can - skip to @1:20 or @4:37 and especially @5:46 and @7:43 to see how flexible his big toe is:

This video is good to watch, in case you have plantar fasciitis, which I developed recently, but stretching exercises have cured it. However, my big toe will not bend at all, and I was unaware than anyone could bend their big toe down as far as is shown in this video.

Runner stretches (shown in this video @4:56) also helped me. I think the calf stretches helped me the most, but my foot pain started with getting a kink in my calf and then traveled down to my foot, and I had severe pain in my foot, not to mention my calf.

Anyway, this is my own personal silly little triumph, and I accomplished it just last week, which is my it is on my mind.

When I was younger, I used to do yoga exercises, but they are more difficult for me now.

Silly little triumph
