I can buy eggs at (as of last week) for $2.49/dz at Trader Joe's, or $4.79 at the independent grocer. Large size, local brand, nothing special.

I paid $2.57 yesterday for a doz. That was down from two weeks before. They are like gas up and down a bit every week. It's gas that's going INSANE. Which actually I am fine with given how the average American votes with their pockbook!!! WOOT WOOT

Egglands Extra Large are $3.49, but they are always more expensive than the store brand. Store brand are $2.99.

Locally, the Acme carries medium eggs.

My math says $18 /30 = .6 - which is almost twice per egg than what I'm paying here, for organic no less.

I've seen medium eggs in the stores. I'm fine with them for a salad or over easy but they look a little small for baking - so I don't. We get most of our eggs from a friend with a flock of 'pet girls'. If I do buy any, its usually Trader Joe's and none of their prices have startled me....I'm fairly certain less than $3 dozen.

I don't buy Egglands with their additional iodine. My Graves thyroid has completely reversed itself to all but non-functioning Hashimoto's over the years, but my annual levels are done with me still accustomed to watching for additional iodine and levels have been good with my long time med dose - making me more inclined to make no changes.

We buy a dozen eggs maybe once or twice a month, and so the cost is a tiny fraction of our food bill, and I have not paid much attention to it. Often I find jumbo eggs at the same price as large, and so I buy those when that happens. I pay much more attention to the price of seafood, which seems to go up and down a lot.

Dh gets them from the farmer’s market during the season. He will pay the $10/2 dozen there, but not at the store! These are local, but the eggs are not well-sorted by size, there are medium and larger in the same carton, but we don’t do much baking, so it’s fine. Mainly for breakfast and salads and cooking, all for two.

Heinen's is celebrating an anniversary. Eggs of any size were free to regular customers last week. We like their extra large eggs -- $3.59. It was a first to see medium brown eggs advertised at Jewel recently; $2 a dozen. "Medium" is reeely small. I scrambled six instead of four.

What's the big deal about the color of an eggshell? Isn't that determined by the color of the 'grit' hens are fed?

My neighbor keeps me supplied in eggs in exchange for me throwing my vege food scraps over the fence to the "ladies."

When I go out just to water my flowers, they come running to the fence expecting some scraps. And if I don't have anything to give them, they (the chickens) chew me out. It's quite comical.

We live in California, about 40 miles from San Francisco. A flat of eggs is 5 dozen. That's about $3.60 a dozen. I bake often and we use a lot of eggs.

I recall medium eggs at the store but didn't note the price as those weren't my purchase target.

It appears that instead of complaining, I should have been more thankful, LOL. Last week the price was $14, but we didn't need them at the time. A few weeks before that we paid the usual price of $7.98.

$3.60 a dozen when purchased in bulk like that sounds like a moderate price but I understand you're saying it's pricier than it used to be.

Here's what I know about colored eggs:

Brown or white eggs depend on the breed of hen - some breeds lay bluish green or olive eggs too. The brown color is only on the outside, as some may have noticed when breaking them open. The color requires that an egg spend extra time inside the hen's body before laying to add that overlay of color, hence a slightly higher cost for producers.

And I believe size is related to the age and nutrition of the hen. My sister keeps backyard chickens, and has an Americauna that lays blue-green eggs. Her hens laid very small eggs at first, but now they're larger.

There was the bird flu epidemic recently, and I know that a huge number of birds had to be destroyed because of it.

A friend of mine keeps a variety of hens, some of them Araucanas which lay olive to aqua-bluish eggs. A crossbred Araucana-something else has started laying dark pink eggs :-D

No, there's no evidence that brown chickens take longer to lay brown eggs than white chickens, but the color of the eggshell depends on the breed of the hen. Brown chickens are usually larger and need more food to produce eggs, which can make them more expensive for farmers to produce.

The two egg boxes show difference grades, the more expensive is AA and the less expensive is A. I wonder if that's the difference, maybe but also a likely factor is the location (higher vs lower cost of living areas)

I didn't notice that additional box label difference and should have remembered to think of it. Comparing the two boxes is like one of those puzzles where there are 8 things different as between two similar but subtly different images, find and circle those differences.

Effective a few years ago (I believe), chickens producing eggs to be sold in California (whether the chickens are located in the state or in another state) must be housed in a cage-free environment. Uncaged quarters can themselves be pretty crowded but there are minimum per bird space requirements and the birds are free to move around. What the US egg industry uses otherwise are so-called "battery cages" with about 70 square inches per bird. That's a space 10 inches by 7 inches, as an example and is much less room than the cage free rules allow. .

I think a few other states in addition to California ban the use of cages to house egg producing chickens. Not surprisingly, the I believe the EU banned the small cages some time ago.

No matter how much eggs are, IMHO, they are still one of the best deals out there. A flat is a lot of meals, as eggs are SO versitile.

I can't imagine there are many households that buy so many eggs at a time. But even when paying the price for one dozen at a time, and whether it's the least expensive mass produced brands or the more expensive smaller market niche producers, eggs are an inexpensive source of healthy protein and nutrition.

My neighbor with three sons and a daughter bought eggs by the dozen-and-a-half. Between breakfast, baking, and other meals, eggs were the most affordable protein.

We’re spending more these days on eggs but we think the quality justifies this. Paid $5.98 for this dozen, three dollars more than the store brand for large eggs.

We buy our eggs from a farmer about 2 miles away. His hens are free ranged, nice sized ex-large and the yokes are a deep orange color compared to those pale yellows from the store. At $4/dozen price but we like em', he sells to others for $5/doz so I'll give him some fruits & veggies during our growing season. Still, typical eggs are cheaper at the local grocer. We used to have 6 hens here but we're down to just one which is basically a pet now, she still lays eggs but not enough to keep us supplied.
