America's melting pot?

Many people think about the East coast, the Statue of Liberty and the Europeans coming in. But I would posit, that there is a secondary, if not equal, melting pot, on the West Coast. It is the sort of place where Asians and Mexicans meld with Americans who founded the untamed America. I have heard the food called PanAsian, but there is an influence that is also Mexican. It is unique.

I don't know that you can understand it, unless you live the West Coast style. And I would argue that it's equally important.

What say you West Coasters?

Good topic! I live in Oakland, CA- arguably one of the most culturally and racially diverse cities in the country. I’ve never thought of the term “melting pot” as an east coast thing. I’ve always thought the term refers to the entire country. As for local food, there’s lots of Asian, Mexican, California locavore and really everything else you can think of. It would be easier to single out what food you cannot find here.

California is the most amazing place when it comes to food. Every produce, and every seafood.

I am originally from Detroit--we graduated from college, got married, and moved down here (Houston)in 1981 because of the recession back then...no one was hiring. All the rest of our family and friends are still up there...one by one, getting laid off, things getting tight. Almost everything is tied into the auto industry...for instance, several have been laid off in constriction, employees of one of the Big 3 have lost jobs, my brother works for Sirius/XM Satellite Radio...new car sales down=less customers, even one laid off after 10 years being with an animal hospital--people do not not have the $$ for pet surguries. Many people don't have the $$ to send their kids to college & student loans are of a different time! These kids are the future of our country... I know we have cut back...everyone needs to hope for the best, prepare for the worst. ~MJ I am not a Democrat---but I am praying that our new president (and his crew...) can make the right decisions for the future of our country.

Fastest easiest way to melt base

FYI- the crockpot worked wonderfully! It melted 5 lbs of base in a little less than two hours without me having to do anything to it! No stirring, nothing. I was able to make 18 bars of soap at once and Yippee...I'm thrilled! Thanks for the great ideas...Jill, I'll keep that roaster in mind. ;) Kristi
