David Austin America 2 qt potted roses

I have gotten potted roses before from Antique Rose Emporium and Roses unlimited, but had always gotten bare root rose from DA. Well 2 of my 4 arrived yesterday in the 2 qt pots, other 2 should arrive today, and I have to say they did a nice job on em. One rose to a box with a square pot full of soil and topped with some kind of water retaining moss. They seem to cost about the same as bare roots, maybe a hair more on shipping, but just thought I would share my experience. They are really good sized plants, that are about the same size now as the bare root ones I planted 2 months ago have grown to. The soil and everything was moist and it was wrapped in a plastic bag like all rose shippers do. I am only about 6 or so hours from Tyler where they shipped from so they weren't in shipping long enough to dry out anyway.

Now, kingcobb, why do you have to share? How am I supposed to keep my hard-earned Moolah. Cannot really buy anything cause every cents (nearly literally) on my checking is going to the IRS on April 18th, but wait until May when I stop working for the government and get to put my hands on "my" money..... :) :) Heading over the DA's website now. Maybe I will celebrate tax freedom day by splurging at DA.com

Thanks for the info, kingcobb. What did you order? I just noticed one of the 3 I'm interested in is sold out. I wonder if they would dry out en route to MN.

Of the roses you listed, I know only about Gertrude Jekyll (very thorny!) and Scepter'd Isle. Don't remember how it was thorn-wise, but it is a lovely rose, kind of thin, tall, and lanky canes, although my Scepter'd Isle which I have been growing in the ground for several years now is only about 3.5-4 ft tall at most. Hard to measure, however, because its cane have a graceful drooping quality. Lovely blooms. Hope that helps. Have you considered Princess Alexandria of Kent? Helen, I’m a little confused about Boscobel. When I ordered mine, I ordered it potted, because I wanted it ownroot. Now, when I go to DA’s site Boscobel says nothing about being ownroot anymore. I’m almost certain what I ordered was supposed to be ownroot. I don’t always trust myself, because my MS messes up my short term memory terribly. It’s getting later and later in the season for planting for me. If there’s a very long wait for my potted Boscobel, and the bareroots are supposed to be ownroot, I’d rather switch and take the bareroot now. I know I need to call them, but I’m wondering about them telling you Boscobel was ownroot and it appears to be grafted. I definitely want ownroot. It doesn’t really matter to me whether it’s bareroot or potted. I’m hoping you, or someone can confirm that it WAS listed as ownroot, previously. I don’t 100% trust my memory, and hate making a fool of myself(again) by insisting on something that I’m not remembering correctly. If you want a fluffy pink, have you considered Princess Alexandra of Kent? She's about 3.5 x 2.5 and, according to David Austin, has a "delicious fresh tea fragrance with aspects of lemon and blackcurrants." Princess Alexandra of Kent I wouldn't know since I do not grow her, but if I had any space left open, I would definitely plant her in my garden. Austin adds that she is highly fragrant and very healthy also and "ideal for pots and containers." Really BIG blooms, I'm told. Kate

I have a loamy clay here in zone 6. I have tried a number of Austins and I loved them, but I usually ended up with some kind of foliage issue. It's been awhile, so I don't remember what. I keep trying different roses that are thought to be good in a no spray garden and last spring I planted - Savannah and Beverly and Pope John Paul. Savannah is a Kordes - my first. It was enjoyable in it's first season. Pretty foliage and I liked the color and texture of the blooms. It didn't grow too much or produce many flowers, but I didn't expect a lot in it's first year starting off bare root from Palatine. But by the end of the season, it was suddenly showing some problem with one of the canes. Not insects, but disease. I left it alone and just hoped for the best this spring. This spring, it had some leaf buds on it, but they deteriorated as soon as they opened and while the other roses were pushing out more buds and then opening leaves, Savannah did nothing and looked worse. So I decided to cut all the canes back to the ground. And I thought that was the end of it really, but to my surprise, it sprouted new canes - about 3 of them. Right now it's about 6-8" tall and has leafed out and looks okay. Not a great start for a rose though. Beverly is another Kordes and last year it did fine and produced more flowers than Savannah and looked healthy. This year it has filled out with leaves. I usually have roses starting to open by June 1st, so, we'll see how it does this year. The foliage looked clean all season last year and so far this year too. Maybe by the end of this season I'll be able to make a better comparison.

The 2qts were claire austin and munstead wood. I had to get 2 bare roots in PAOK and CPM. But they said they would have 2 qts on April 25. Call them up and ask them. I took a risk on bare roots but think they will be fine. Call though and they will tell you for your area. They may not have even started shipping to MN yet.

I received a bareroot order from them already which had a blackspot issue. They immediately replaced the order which I am very pleased with. I could order more bare root. I just thought it seems preferable to order potted. Not sure.

Oh, you will love Claire Austin. At least I do. I also want Munstead Wood. I ordered one years ago from Hortico, but accidentally killed it. Sadly, I never got to see it bloom.

I hear you on the taxes, farmerduck. Exactly which day is tax freedom day?

It is April 24th this year, I think, for the nation as a whole. Taking into local and state taxes, for it could be more like May and even June for a lot of people living in the NYC area. Tax here is so bad that I doubt we would be able to afford living in my house once we retire even if we somehow had magically managed to pay off the mortgage. You would need to work full time to just pay the real estate tax in this town. By the rate it is going up, there is little chance we would be able to afford that. Well, at least I have a full yard of roses, for now... That is something I can escape to. ...

Sorry for hijacking the thread. The two-gallons look very tempting. May get Princess Alexandra of Kent. I got one plant from S&W nursery, but it frozen to death in the Polar Vortex (as their delivery date was, if i recall correctly, February the latest).

My DA order took 3 days USPS, and last year 2 weeks UPS, Mn kitty. You can request the USPS. I think it was Priority 3 day service.

I just received my DA order UPS that took three days, while a Burlington order took 2days USPS from California. The annoying thing was that the package arrived in 2 days to a location just 10 miles up the road, where it left to travel north 200 miles and back again 36 hrs later. I'd have happily just driven to pick it up, I was so excited! who can explain their routing. Chamblee ships FedEx; let's hope they do better. :)

Probably, mnkitty. I believe Priority was $35 for 5 large bareroot plants. It was worth it to me, when the UPS had taken two weeks. I realize this was one experience and hopefully UPS is not always that slow.
