2 qt. potted from David Austin
Comments (32)Well, doesn't look like there is any viable part to this rose: I sent photos to DA and they are replacing it in the fall. They agree that it looks like it got heat damaged in transit and want to wait until the weather cools down. Unfortunately that means more waiting. But then isn't gardening called the slowest of all the performance arts? I suppose I need to be patient. Matt, I did break it up and there were 3 cuttings in the pot just as you said. Unfortunately not one survived. At least I already have one Munstead Wood. Sheila, thanks for your positive attitude. I am used to receiving small bands, and you are right, the variety of plants from on-line/mail order vendors makes it worth it even if it is more expensive for a smaller plant. Own-root plants are not available locally for me. This experience will not make me shy away from ordering more roses by mail (I just wanted to know if others had the same or similar experience with the 2 qt. Austin product)! I'm bummed that I missed the ARE sale. Or rather, I didn't miss it, I just don't have room for more plants! The first bare-root plants I received from DA a few years ago were 3 Bishop's Castle, and these were huge plants, with many 2-1/2 foot long roots, so I was disappointed that this year's shipment didn't compare to those. When I planted that Abe, it looked like this: Now it looks like this:It's still much smaller than yours, Diane, but it is growing!...See MoreDavid Austin Roses in Pots
Comments (18)Thank you so much for all the information! @dianela7analabama, wow, BB gets huge for you - also, the statute surrounded by roses is beautifully romantic! If it gets that big for me, I'll need to plant in the ground after the first season. @mustbnuts zone 9 sunset 9, your patio is a dream and inspires me to consider doing SO MUCH MORE with my patio...over time. :) Based on what I've heard here, I've decided to plant the Gertrude Jekyll in the flower bed. I will pot Golden Celebration and Benjamin Britton with the expectation that I will extend the flower bed to the area right behind the pots and can transfer the roses to the ground for next year, if they are getting too big or otherwise not doing great in the pots. I bought bone meal to add to the potting soil and fish fertilizer to use every 2 weeks or so (thank goodness the garden centers/feed stores around here are taking phone orders for curbisde pick-up). I'm looking at Bloem 20" planters on Amazon, one is 14.5" high and the other is 17" high. (I have a smaller one already that I like.) Big enough? https://www.amazon.com/Bloem-DC20-46-Cotta-Planter-20-Inch/dp/B00GUBDF6Y/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1W1BZC325FRSI&dchild=1&keywords=bloem+planter+20+inch&qid=1586178504&sprefix=bloem+planter%2Caps%2C182&sr=8-3 https://www.amazon.com/Bloem-Terra-Planter-Living-Green/dp/B003IPH0BG/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1W1BZC325FRSI&dchild=1&keywords=bloem+planter+20+inch&qid=1586178504&sprefix=bloem+planter%2Caps%2C182&sr=8-5 I have a couple of 16" nursery pots from fruit trees I bought this spring, but I think that will be too small. I love the look of Versailles planters, so I may try to get creative with that in the future, although I'm not very handy....See MoreBoscobel potted david austin Blackspot
Comments (4)A leafed out rose trapped in a warm, stuffy shipping box can easily develop blackspot I grow three 'Boscobel' and they are extremely healthy It reads that you are saying the plant becomes infected while inside a box - with there having been no black spot present before the plant was boxed up - and that the fungus also develops to the point of being fully manifested and visible during the mere days it takes to ship the box. I wonder how this is possible....See MoreAnyone have some old David Austin’s? Cuttings to trade
