Favorite ice cream?

We rarely have desserts unless we're out for a more upscale dinner or we have company. I'll buy ice cream for home maybe 3 or 4 times a year.

But someone recommended Tillamook Peaches and Cream ice cream, and Jim asked me to buy some, because as a kid, his family would make peach ice cream on 4th of July, from a neighbor's peaches.

Well, this is like homemade. Really really good. A delicious treat.

Only other ice cream that I find it hard to resist is a pistachio gelato that a local Italian restaurant occasionally serves, but that's maybe three or 4 times a year.

What's your favorite ice cream? And if you like peaches, I recommend the Tillamook.

Graeter's Peach, only available in the summer, and their Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip. The consistency of their ice cream is like no other, soft and creamy, and the flavors are outstanding.

Your favorite Ice Cream flavor and something strange

    Q

    Comments (38)
My family and I were in Parma, Italy (one of the gastronomic capitals of the world, and believe me, we went to town!) last summer, and I had violet gelato. That's right, violet. Oh. My. Frickin'. God. It was like eating essence of flowers. I can still taste it! That being said, my favorite flavor may be Italian hazelnut (nocciola), and to all who say there's no difference between store-brand and higher end, them's fightin' words. In summer, my favorite's peach. Lest you now think I'm a total food snob (OK, I actually AM a total food snob, but I go lowbrow too: cheez doodles, street hot dogs, etc.), the something strange is, during college I used to stash my leftover pizza in the box, on the floor underneath my bed. That cold linoleum kept it chilled, nobody with the late nite munchies could steal it, and it was right there for breakfast in the morning! Extra bonus strange: my Dad, whose interest in experimental cooking predated fusion cuisine and all that, used to put grapefruit peel in the marinara sauce. No, it did not taste good. Jim

salgal- I have to agree with you about Lapp Valley Farm in Pa. When we live in CT we went to Lancaster County twice a year to visit the Amish. We found that farm when we were riding around. The ice cream could not be beat. The older Amish man told us he could wrap the ice cream for us so we could bring it back to CT & it would not thaw & he was right. Hubby has a sweet tooth so we always came back with at least 8-10 gallons.

Any time, anywhere. I don't particularly care for walnuts. Otherwise, if it's cold and in the ice cream counter, bring it on. Dairy Queen, that works., Wendy's frosty, can make do. I haven't bought any lately because fat. We also get the buy 2 get 3 free offers, and I have a big freezer. :) Too much temptation. DH is pining for mint chocolate chip, I may have to give in. I think it's on special this week. OMG, the chocolate black cherry. Be right back, gotta run to the store ....

I live nearby Tillamook so have been eating their ice cream for years. I wish they'd make more plain fruit flavors without add-ins. I like their old-fashioned vanilla and love Udderly Chocolate. Their new Orange and Cream tastes like Creamsicles.

There's so many I like, I can't pick a favorite. But I do enjoy the vanilla with fudge ripple and dark chocolate chunks. I also enjoy vanilla with raspberry swirls and dark chocolate chunks. But I also enjoy mint choc chip and coffee which I love with walnuts and maple syrup. Even a good vanilla is nice, a good choc chip, sweet cream, and cinnamon.

We discovered Tillamook ice cream recently and love it! We get vanilla and add toppings, or use it to top cake.

I love sorbet, haven’t had it in ages so in a recent search it was hard to find. I saw lots of sorbetto, had to look up the difference. It's in the freezer now, I will try it this weekend. I find sorbet to be so refreshing after dinner.

There are a lot of artisanal ice creameries in my area and with some pretty exotic flavors offered. Like lemon lavender, cranberry pomegranate, wild blackberry, mojito and orange chocolate. And I've tried my share :-)) Except for a periodic need for chocolate, I prefer the fruit flavors, the blackberry being very high on my list. So most sorbets and gelatos. I am very fond of Talenti's raspberry sorbet and their blood orange.

We have a local Artisanal ice cream company that sells wholesale mostly and is found in many fine dining restaurants in the region. The almost went out of business during the pandemic because the restaurants were closed for so long. So they loaded up their delivery trucks and drove to towns and cities around the PNW, posted on FB and in newspapers where they would be. customers showed up in droves to buy quarts of whatever they had. Blocks long lines. Their flavors rotate. My fave is their Madagascar Vanilla 2nd is Lemon Chiffon. But I’ve never had a flavor that wasn’t delicious. Olympic Mountain Ice Cream

Spumoni, from The Old Spaghetti Factory, is hands down my favorite. Pistachio, chocolate, and cherry?! Can't be beat.

Our family favorite is homemade mint ice cream. If you've never made it, I highly suggest doing so.

I love chocolate but really like citrus flavors. We've been buying Farr's Lime Rickey Ice Cream this summer. It isn't the "best" ice cream, but it's hit the spot during this hot hot summer.

Chocolate, Brownie batter, cookies and cream, cookie dough. I used to go to cold stone and get the Dutch chocolate ice cream with Oreos, hot fudge and brownie pieces mixed in. Divine.

I actually do not remember when I last had ice cream. I never crave it. I am more drawn to a warm dessert. SO loves Haagan Dazs Dulce de Leche. I make him a milkshake with it at least once a week.

Another vote for mint chocolate chip. There’s an artisanal ice cream place near my hairdresser. Sometimes I indulge in mint chip there or their Key Lime flavor.

Nothing better than pistachio gelato. Although it needs to be good pistachio, not just green-tinted yuck. There is a wonderful gelato store in downtown NYC, that has flavors that you would never think of. Don't knock sweet potato, cucumber or basil until you've tried it. One of my favorite destinations!

I have an ice cream maker with a compressor, and so it is very easy for me to make my own ice cream quickly. One of my favorites is cherimoya, which only requires two ingredients: fresh cherimoya (which I used to grow) and cream. Cherimoya by itself tastes like vanilla custard.

My favorite to buy is mamey, and recently I have found mamey paletas at truck stops on Interstate 5. Guanabana is another favorite.

Of the ones I make the most often, chocolate hazelnut is one favorite, as well as strawberry and vanilla. I make a point of using zero salt when I make ice cream, and this improves the flavor and makes it sweeter. When I make vanilla ice cream, I sometimes add different liqueurs to it afterwards for variations of flavors, such as Amaretto, Frangelico, Kahlua, etc.

"Artisanal" strikes me as an overused/misused word that for some people implies something the noun it's used with is not. Kinda like small breweries calling their products "craft" beer. Small or local were the traditional words often used in these instances but these lack an implied feel-good but meaningless element. Is there a difference between an artisanal ice cream maker and a local one? A craft beer and a beer from a small local brewery? I don't think so. Just marketing lingo perhaps.

I don't eat ice cream often but my favorite flavor is traditional Cherry Vanilla - vanilla ice cream with a generous amount of maraschino cherries. Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia is that but also with chocolate chunks added, a reasonable substitute.

Way back, in college, I worked in a business hotel in Texas. One evening, a guest comes to check in, and his corporate host is carrying a little cooler. As the guest checks in, his host asks if I can have to spoons sent up to the room. Umm, … sure… The host smiles and says, ”he’s from (some state) and has never had Bluebell ice cream.“ and he holds up the cooler. ”Cookies and cream?” I ask? He opens the cooler, and yes! I had the spoons sent right up.

Bluebell was good ice cream, from a particularly scenic part of Texas. Their tagline was, why does it taste so good? Because it’s made in Brenham, and the cows think Brenham is heaven.”

We don't eat very much ice cream, which is little odd since even though I haven't much of a sweet tooth, I do love dairy and most things made from dairy.

DH does like Tillamook vanilla bean and he will sometimes pick some up when he has done the shopping. I think I'd like the Orange and Cream. We have a local hispanic butcher who is excellent and he has some odds and end of other things in his shop. He gifted me with an orange and vanilla ice cream bar the last time I was there shopping and it brought back a wave of childhood memories of those dixie cups of orange and vanilla that came with their own wooden spoon 😁

If I'm buying ice cream for the freezer, I'll pick up only Haagen Dazs and in a simple flavor - chocolate, vanilla, strawberry.

A friend who makes out of town deliveries for her work 3 or 4 times a month will stop someplace in Shelton where they carry the Olympic Mountain brand. She'll drop some off sometimes and its very good but she has only brought somewhat complicated flavors. I'm appreciative but would be picking out the basics, more simple if I were doing the purchasing myself. I know its a brand served in several of the better restaurants from their dessert menu. I can't remember the last time I finished a lovely complete meal and still had room for dessert....

Right now I have some Tillamook Vanilla Bean that I bought and when my son was here he got some Amaretto Cherry Cordial which is a Kroger Private Select brand. He said he got it because there are no Krogers in Nebraska and he really likes that ice cream. Now I have to finish it. I like it okay but it's a little rich for me these days.

My old favorite was Rocky Road but if I buy it now I have to make sure it has almonds and not walnuts because some brands will make it with something other than almonds. I also used to love Jamoca Almond Fudge but again it's a little too rich for me now.

My favorite brand was Haagen-Dazs but I have no access to it in Kentucky.

Blue Bell (it's two words) is outside my acceptable price range. I rarely buy ice cream. I bought a half-gal of HEB store-brand Vanilla Bean yesterday for $5.98 when I spied a $1-off coupon ... which is interesting because the regular price is stated online as $7.26. It's a splurge either way. I'd usually get budget-level Blue Bunny or GV at WM. I usually put it in the garage fridge/freezer so it's away from daily recurring view.

Tillamook is a dairy coop that I believe began in the county of the same name in coastal Oregon.

DD1 and I were in Rome in March, and we had read about a gelato store that had rice pudding gelato. Challenge accepted! Rome's subway system is not very extensive, and many places are accessible by foot power only. We walked 3 miles to get to this tiny place, but it was so worth the effort. We could pick either plain or cinnamon. Another gelato place had earl grey tea gelato, also incredible. Good thing we walked off all the calories.

Ice cream is my favorite food, but I don't eat it that often. I mostly prefer from independent ice cream stores and to have it in a sugar cone ~~~ heaven.

I would eat it every day and back in my 20's, when I was a size 4 or 6, I ate a cone every day for lunch. I have to really limit buying it at the supermarket because I have less than zero willpower or portion control.

In the summer I might have it once or twice a week. Today, I went to one of my favorites, from a farm--- each flavor is named for their cows.

Today I had Duchess' Chocolate Supreme.

Tillamook is a new offering in my local chain grocers. There have been promotions at half price -- and BOGO's. I think Ben & Jerry's is higher quality at about $4 a pint. Tillamook is $7 for 1.5 gallons.

Ice cream gurus say to dish up ice cream and let it sit a few minutes so that your tongue can appreciate the flavors.. Try that with Tillamook, and you'll get a watery 'soup'. The B & J will turn to cream.

Tillamook has done several things here. It is easy to scoop, and you can taste the flavors right away. Instant gratification! The bigger cartons make it look like a bargain. (It is better than the even more heavily aerated, huge carton store brands that weigh almost nothing.)

I rarely eat ice cream, although we have excellent producers locally. I only fancy it in hot weather and that's rare. But when I'm in Italy, as I am at the moment, I'll have it every day. A large cone with 1 scoop of lemon and 1 of coffee. If I had to choose I'd take the coffee. As a dessert I'll have an affogato. I like my flavours strong and simple. I do have ice-cream at the theatre sometimes in which case I'll generally go for stem ginger or honeycomb.
