Wolf cabinets: Yay or nay?
Comments (3)I saw a display last year. According to the folks in that shop, Wolf was a pretty good deal. Perhaps because of the price point and two week turn around time, they had one lower cabinet partially disassembled, so buyers could check out construction. They said they had no complaints. Most sales had been to owners of houses rented through the summer (families with teenagers), and therefore take abuse. Wolf gets to the price and turnaround time by limited styles and sizes. In our quirky small kitchen Wolf wasn't an option....See MoreKitchen Table - Yay or Nay?
Comments (11)To me, your table area is calling for a nook or banquette. You can use ikea cabinets to inexpensively and not permanently create a banqutte. I used 12" ikea upper cabinets to create a bench and it served my kids well for a long time. After a while, we had a 15" upholstered top made for the bench (which cost significantly more than the bench cabinets). Here is a picture that is similiar to your space: And here is one with a single bench: And lastly, here is my cheapo ikea bench: If I was to do the ikea bench again, I would use 2x4 pcs. of wood to create a base for the cabinets or leave the doors off the cabinets and use baskets for storage. The way I had it, the cabinet doors scraped on the floor. Good luck! Its a nice table and I think you will use the table alot once your little ones enter the homework years....See MoreMixing brass & copper in the kitchen - yay or nay?
Comments (26)My advice is to go for it, Kathy! We didn't get the brass faucet (my husband didn't like the bridge style and besides, they were way too pricey for us....) We went with "champagne bronze" which works, but honestly, I don't love it. My hope was that it would echo the brushed gold cabinet pulls. It sort of does, but a brighter color would have been better. We haven't installed the pot filler yet (still waiting on that GE Cafe range; ugh), but my husband chose copper and now I'm worried since it doesn't match the faucet. We could have gone with copper on the faucet (the fake kind) since it stays shiny and the sink has the patina, and so would match the hardware on the appliances. I may end up changing out that sink faucet. (It may be too many metals; although we don't have stainless in there, so that helps.) Either way, they all look good with the Cambria Britannica gold, and the SW pure white cabinets as well as the green cabinets. I still haven't chosen a backsplash, believe it or not.... (please ignore the cereal and junk; just visited IKEA and the grocery store!)...See MoreQuarter sawn oak-painted uppers yay or nay
Comments (145)North Iowa here.. What no one on this thread understands is there are no "green spaces" here. We have Habitat ReStore. We have Menard's or maybe Lowe's or Home Depot. Iowa people help each other all the time. Craig's list has junk. I did a kitchen gut 10+ years ago with Menard's hickory cabinets and laminate counters. No back splash. Existing Vinyl floor. Used my just fine white appliances. My house was built in 1880 so no open concept here. My kitchen is a room. A small room by comparison to almost all kitchens on here. I had a handyman who worked cheap. I had known him for at least 30 years so when I left for work I knew he'd deal with whatever came along. He was gone when I got home and I did clean up. I also did the gutting of the old kitchen; dead mice in the light fixture but he warned me about the potential so I was prepared. Maybe I was very, very lucky but I got a great kitchen for $10,000. I don't know what inflation would do to that price today. Compared to what I started with I now have a palace. You are a long way from final plans and I think you will do just fine. It takes a lot of price comparison shopping to get there. And shopping on eBay and Menard's sales. Don't over look the consignment shops. If you do Menard's cabinets wait until they have the 11% off. If you visit the cabinet people there regularly and tweak your layout, you will find people you really like and who like you and they will tell you when the sales are coming up. You can also make your own laminate counters for cheap. I didn't do that 4 inch backsplash thing and even though I didn't do any other kind of backsplash, I'm glad I didn't add it. Right now I have wallpaper but I'm thinking I might tile some paneling that's cut to fit so that if I get tired of it I can pull it off and put something else there....See Morebpath
