Damaged oriental lily sprouts

Hello, I am very new to this and seeking advice. I planted 5 oriental lilies, 3 stargazers that haven't made it out yet and 2 plain white both of which sprouted. Unfortunately I have some pest in a garden that's digging up holes and damaged one of them very badly. Essentially ripped off the tip. Is there any way to save it or can I say goodbye to flowers this year? I love lilies but they have been an absolute failure so far.... my visitor also damaged dahlia but that one is apparently quite resilient ....

If the sprout has been damaged or removed, then unfortunately there will be no flowers this year. Leave whatever remains intact and the bulb should be fine and with no further damage, bloom next season.

Yep, same thing happened to me. Rabbits are worse this year than in the almost 20 years I've had this garden. [frown emoji] I managed to get fencing around some of the remaining ones, so I will at least have a few flowers. They also ate my asparagus tips!

I planted about 12 Color Parade from wild's about a week ago. I forgot to mix bone meal in the bottom of the hole, marked where I planted them. I just checked, and they are orientals. When should they start showing and what can I do to make up for not putting bone meal in the hole? I have some Beaty liquid kelp, regular Miracle Gro, some Miracle Gro bloom booster, and Osmocote. I'd be more inclined to use the kelp but not until they come up and grown some. Certainly wouldn't use but one of the fertilizers. IF they come up which is a big if because I stored them in the fridge until the bed was ready and some had green mold (think a little of that is ok) but some of the bulblets were blackened which I scraped off, should have treated them with something but just wanted to get them in the ground.

Hi, It's not abnormal since we had such a warm winter and everything is sprouting/blooming early. I hope you planted the bulbs 8 inches deep. The other bulbs will soon catch up and bloom-hopefully on schedule! If not you'll just have early blooms : ) Jen

You can plant them in pots our outside, and they are perennials that come back every year. I grow many varieties of lilies and they usually come up as soon as the snow melts, and well before the last freeze so they are pretty cold hardy. As far as increasing their numbers, that's actually pretty easy to do with any species of lily just because almost every part of the plant can produce bulbils. I've layed a stem sideways in the soil, and gotten several plants to form that way before. Here is a link that might be useful: pictures of some of my lilies

That sounds like a pretty good sized bulb. Since the orientals are already blooming, odds are you won't have any bloom this year, but you should get the foliage at best. Next year you'll have blooms. That's not to say you won't get blooms; it's possible. I planted some orientals in the late spring last year, and a few of them bloomed, maybe just one bloom or so. I don't know if you can force bloom them inside or not. Any other opinions out there? I've never planted one in a container before. Lilies do like well-drained soil, and to dry out a little between waterings. They are bulbs and too much water will rot them. On the other hand, I've seen my lilies take a lot of abuse from mother nature, and they don't seem to mind too much. Lilies like their feet in the shade and tops in the sun, like Clematis. I don't know about potted lilies, if you should mulch the pot, or set a lot of pots around it might help keep the roots cooler. Good luck. Susan

Rabbits here too. I was so excited to see two big fat stems coming up on a 'Black Beauty' Lily and the next day, something had taken a big bite off the top. I'm not sure what to expect. I'm going to try to cover them over at night, like with an upside down milk crate to keep the rabbits away. The lilies are in my front in an unfenced area and I can't keep them out. Sometimes if I cover plants at night as long as I can, when they get taller, the rabbits are less interested. Maybe because they like the new fresh spring growth?

I hate to contemplate having to protect them every season. I have enough to make it a real nuisance.
