This sounds like a lovely space for them. I think that the teen view of decor is very different than ours and what works and what does not. This could be a nice project for them to make the choices together, and will also let you off the hook if one of them does not like it. My DD is also drawn to strong colors, esp. orange, but it is quite overwhelming on the walls. Last year I bought her a bright orange bedspread and we are updating it now and her new choice is an aqua blue. So it seems she herself is now finding her room to be "hot" and wanted to bring some coolness to it. Look In your situation, I'd really encourage the girls to agree on a wall color with one accent wall. Show them some websites and catalogs from Pottery Barn Teen to give them some ideas. IKEA is another good source for ideas and accent pieces for teens. I'd let their separate personalities have free reign with their choice of bedspreads, decorative pillows, etc. Put up a large corkboard for each girl to pin up stuff that is important to them and remind both they can express their individuality by hanging up posters, etc. Perhaps DD who loves bright colors may be content with a more sedate wall color if she can put up some colorful artwork. It may look jaring to you, but what is more important is that they love it. As for sleepovers, I second Les' suggestion of aerobeds. I have a twin and it works great. If there is more than one child sleeping over my kids would go in the family room anyway and use sleeping bags.

shellfish: Oh, lovely room. That is right up my alley as well! I'm so envious of your space! I like the idea of the white coverlet which I may add in winter below the duvet. DD and I are still looking through the samples though lean towards a more saturated color like boxerpup's DS's room, then a lighter shade for the ceiling. Hope to narrow it down to a few paint samples to test on the walls. DD has little patience with me as I wanted to show her the inspiration pics. I'd rather she just pick a look she likes and let me narrow down the paint colors to 2-3 that match the one in a picture. That has always been my difficulty in doing her room--she just focuses on one aspect, the bedding, WTs or paint and not how they all look together in her room, with her floor and lighting. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done in terms of room layout at present and it's not possible to remove just the head and footboard. It's a captain's storage bed with four drawers which she uses for her clothes. In another year my DS will most likely go away to college then I think I will let her move into his room which is a smidge larger and then we can do something similar to paintergirl's rendition. In which case I'll be repainting both rooms in a year's time. If it wasn't so hideous right now, I'd just wait another year, but she and I both hate it and the bedding and WTs can simply move to the other room when the time comes. I lvoe the paint color in the living room photo above and think DD would agree to that since it's so vivid. That B&W accents really seem to mitigate the intense shade as I'd hoped it would. Does anyone know what color that is?

I recently redid my 15-year-old DD's room and have seen several makeovers on this forum as well. Each is as individual as the girls whose rooms they are. Since often girls this age have very distinct taste, but don't know how to put it all together or see how all the various choices work together, what really helps is to find some inspiration pictures and work from that. A good place to start is with bedding: PB teen is a great resource for ideas; but often similar items can be found for less at JC Penney's, Bed Bath & Beyond as well as Target and Walmart. Check their websites for best selection. Look at solutions for dorm rooms to get ideas as well, though late summer/early fall is best time for this. Think about your daughter's storage and study needs and take those into consideration to see if you need to change augment her furniture. IKEA has many study, storage solutions as well that are relatiively inexpensive. Daybeds can be a good choice. Here is a link that might be useful: Pottery Barn Teen

I think it's great you want to start this tradition! I did something similar with my kids, and I thought I was lame because I didn't plan too far in advance. And I never consulted Pinterest, the bad mom that I am. But every year my kids and their friends (and their parents) kept participating and appreciated that someone was providing the venue. They won't remember your food or how you decorate, but will remember how you brought them together for fun. Saying that, 13-year-olds are completely unpredictable and irresponsible when it comes to serving themselves food. Unless you want to police how many slices of pizza or how many sundae toppings they can have, I recommend planning for much more than you think will be eaten, unfortunately. I love this age group, but they haven't learned the "my eyes are bigger than my stomach" mantra. Regarding what type of food, I would serve a variety of healthy foods presented in a fun way, like fruit kabobs and fun veggie dips, as well as easy-to-serve like pre-ordered deli sandwiches or pizza. Maybe an ice cream sundae bar if you have the means to keep the ice cream cold during serving time. I would not serve any virgin version of a cocktail. Even among parents you think you know, someone will misinterpret this in a way you did not intend. Water and lemonade are all that I would serve. A craft root beer is as adventurous as I'd get. Music, a few activity items available, etc., and the kids will create their own entertainment. I love what they can create to keep themselves entertained!
