we would like to line our long governors driveway with river rock.

We would like to line our long governor’s driveway with river rock to keep the weeds off of the gravel driveway. We would prefer to use granite block but we cannot dig along the edge because the tree roots will be disturbed. Any advice?

I'm not sure why you think a river rock or stone edging would keep weeds out of a gravel drive. They won't. Debris and weed seeds will blow or filter in and weed growth is inevitable.

I'm not sure river rock would work. It's just really big gravel as far as weeds are concerned. Still lots of nooks and crannies even in very large bits for weeds to invade.

A lot of folks use weed killers, pre-emergents, and even some weed burners to keep gravel clear.

adriennemb, mortar on the bottom of the pond would hold up as long as anywhere else assuming your pond doesn't freeze solid. Cement isn't affected by cold temps, only ice. It doesn't release chemicals at least at any levels any reasonable person would be concerned about. In a freezing climate you do have to design for the top foot or so, the depth you expect ice. You have all the normal options, bare liner, dry stacked rock, etc. It you want to cover the liner my suggestion is to make cap rocks out of mortar. These can be flipped out of the pond in the fall if you like or left in the pond. Since they just hang there any ice behind them push them up a bit but no harm. The premixed mortars of today don't really fail, at least in our lifetimes. If you kept your pond in the acid range, say 6 pH or less, the acid would attack the cement and slowly dissolve it. Cement makes a poor pH buffer so you probably wouldn't be able to measure any raise in pH using normal pH tests. And in 6 pH and less the life of the mortar would be reduced to maybe the 20 to 30 year range. If the pond is in the 8 pH and above range there is very little affect on cement and you can expect it to last in the 50 to 100 year range. LOL - Ghetto Greenhouse...I love it! You should make a sign for over the door... :-) Nope, I didn't make it out there to repot this weekend. Hubby thought I should get the taxes done while the weather was cold so I wouldn't have to worry about it if it ever warms up. That wasn't nearly as much fun, but now they're ready to send off, so out of my hair (along with plenty of our money, naturally). But I really need to get that repotting done very soon - I have roots going all over the place, and things are just growing like mad! Maybe they'll slow down a bit with this cooler weather. Someone should have warned me about cucumbers though - good lord those things grow fast! I started the seeds last Sunday, and they're already almost two inches high (and needing repotting, of course)! I think next year it might be a good idea to stagger my starts a bit... ;-)

Bigack, I am sorry you're having such a difficult time with your son right now. Addictions are hard whether it be alcohol or drugs or gambling. I feel the hardest thing for an recovering,addicted person to do is to stay away from the old haunts(alcoholics away from bars, Drug addicts away from the pusher)That is one of the hardest things. I have family members who all got into Meth and one is in prison now, one is running from the law, and one has just returned to prison because eventually he went back to his old haunts where the drugs were. I don't have any answers for you but the family meeting for Gamblers would be a good place to start. They help you understand the difference between "helping" and "enabling". I will pray for you and your family.

It would definitely be trouble to have two groundcovers (they usually spread sideways ... ivy does for sure) abutting one another in the same bed. How would you keep them apart? (That looks like English ivy in the picture. Algerian ivy is similar, but is a more robust, more drought resistant plant as I understand it. @longbranchstitch ... " I’m curious about the ivy comment. We live in the PNW where we battle ivy all the time ... I personally would never set out to plant it." You can't identify any use that it would serve ... covering and smoothing over rough ground? ... erosion control? ...growing where no other plants will? ....low cost per square foot of cover? ...evergreen for all-season use? Those are some of the reasons a person might want it. If none of those reasons work for you, why don't you get a serious program going that includes IVY KILLER, and get rid of it? If it's somewhat useful and you don't want to get rid of it all, why don't you consider learning to manage it? For example you complain that it grows up trees. It takes literally one minute per year to severe all the ivy growing up a single tree trunk. If you have 180 trees, that's three hours per year to solve that problem! How much time would it take to mow a lawn on which 180 trees would fit? ... maybe 50 times that amount of time and it would require an expensive machine! So the trade-off for ivy seems possibly favorable on that count. Anyway, you can evaluate whether it could be useful to you, or not, and then either get rid of it or get it under control.

Thanks for your response We have tried river rock closer to the house around a bend in the driveway and we have been pretty successful in keeping the weeds under control in that area. We use Preen for pre-emergent weeds and later weed killers on the rocks to keep the weeds from moving on to the driveway. Of course the weeds will blow in to the driveway but we are able to keep these under control. Otherwise we spend all our weekends pulling weeds from the driveway regardless of weed killers. I am just not sure whether lining a 300 foot driveway will look out of place.

Suppose it depends on what your property looks like. In some situations it might looks great, in others not so much.

See if you can find an inspo pic or visualizer. My mental picture is that it will not look so great to have this different, but knobby/ rocky border on both sides of the more homogeneous gravel, as it introduces a lot more visual pattern.
Plus I’m not sure how patrolling all that on 2 long strips is helpful. Is it just because you think it gives you a better way to use chemical controls, rather than just treatingtgs edge med of the gravel driveway ? Do you have weedy nature growing right up to driveway, and no lawn? And what would be used as an edging barrier for “ the edge of the edge? It’s a boatload of rocks.

Sounds like it will create a whole lot more work to me. It’s easier to keep weeds under control (which you concede you will likely have no matter what) on a flat surface rather than between rock nooks and crannies.

Will the rocks impede vehicle traffic at all? Like a UPS driver in a hurry or a new young driver knocking them out of place?

Do you have snow removal issues which complicates driveway edging?

Do rocks appear naturally in your landscape? IMO they look quite out of place in a manicured suburban neighborhood.

And what is a governor’s driveway?
