It has to do with what they use for rootstock -- the different rules for Pickering and Palatine. Pickering imported theirs from Europe and Palatine grew their own. There were some (retaliatory) rule changes in the import/export regulations (that had zero to do with roses or rose politics or Pickering) and Pickering came out the loser, or so I've heard.

I still have my Blossomtime on the arch. It is doing a little better since I had a maple tree cut down. I also put an own-root one in a large pot next to a fence. I think it's in its third year and is doing pretty well in the pot. The pot is in shade but the plant reaches over the fence into sun. I may have taken the bottom out of the pot so it can freely root into the ground. i don't remember. But if you have a spot that is too hard to dig, one option is to grow a rose in a pot and let it root through the hole. The roots often will penetrate the soil in the tough spot and some can do surprisingly well. I really like your picture of your shrub Blossomtime, Pat bama. It is gorgeous as a shrub. My Blossomtime is kind of bs prone but not extremely and does better with morning sun to dry the leaves.

I'm in a different area for sure, but mine does not ball at all and neither does jasmina . Blossomtime is so very thorny , I hope I never have to move it . It does get black spot but I have a honeysuckle with it so that has filled in where it is bare. Mine is a climber for sure , but I was thinking of cutting it like a shrub in early spring next year. Mine is fragrant for sure . It also is the Japanese beetles absolutely favorite rose :(. Mine is on it's 4th year I think and hasn't stopped blooming since spring , so I am very happy with that !

The ideal space is somewhere that stays between about 30 and 35F. That is colder than is usually acceptable for finished space since it does risk being cold enough to freeze pipes. So the right temperatures are usually found in unfinished space like garages or unheated, enclosed porches. Depending on fairly exactly where you are, against the foundation on the south side of the house can work. The biggest problem people tend to have is wanting to keep the roses somewhere too warm. Then they start growing early, and that growth ends up wasted.
