Climbers that are not cane hardy for zones 6 & colder
Comments (30)Thanks vaporvac! JL like most climbers has a heavy flush of blooms in June, and sporadic thereafter. It can get pretty tall with beautiful pink flowers. I've had mine for at least 15 years. There's another climber that blooms for a long time in my garden and it's Super Excelsa. It starts blooming later in the season, but it continues blooming right up until frost. One thing to warn you though is that it's a thorny monster! LOL. Comments (8)Is your heart set on a red leaf variety? There are numerous Japanese maples of other species than acer palmatum that will do much better in Zone 4, but very few of them have red leaves. 'First flame' is a new acer pseudosieboldianum hybrid on the market that all the JM junkies on Facebook are raving about. It leafs out a beautiful salmon red in the spring, then turns green for summer, with new growth coming in red. 'North wind' is a popular green leafed variety with outstanding orange to red fall color. If you must have red summer color, acer shirasawanum 'Red dawn' is one to look at....See MoreGrowing Roses in Pots in Colder Zones
Comments (5)I grow several roses in pots. The most successful ones are right up against the house. Including climbers! I do protect them (mound straw around the base of the pot) but I think they get plenty of heat from the house. I do focus on VERY hardy roses for pots (that is, things hardy to at least a zone colder than me, like Felix LeClerc and Cape Diamond). But for example Weeping China Doll, which is, I believe, zone 6, has done very well here for a number of years. The only rose I had luck with in a pot out in the middle of the garden was Frontenac, which is something like zone 3. (But even for that, I mounded the pot with straw). So I guess if were you, I'd consider protecting. But maybe somebody in your zone will offer advice. Good luck!...See MoreDavid Austin roses in colder zones
