MG's reply is quite remarkable! First of all I live North of her although close zonewise. And I have managed to grow many Kordes "climbers" for at least 6 years. While for her they are toast. Second to my knowledge she doesn't have any Kordes roses. This is based on her frequent attacks on the German firm of Kordes and their roses. And also having visited her garden although that was a few years ago. Next there is the post by dr A. Being curious about the wherabouts of Voynovia I learned from Google that it is a "fictional" former territory of the Soviet Union. So I assume his whereablout might be fictional too? And where did he get his info on Baltimore Belle. Having been bred in 1840 something who has any accurate information about that? But the proof is in the pudding so I suppose we should accept his input on BB's hardiness? More fiction? As to hardiness and survivability. So much depends on other things as Riku will testify. I have planted a number of roses supposedly hardy that are now gone. Carefree Beauty, Darlow's Enigma, John Cabot, Henry Kelsey, Alexander McKenzie, Madame Hardy, Viking Queen and several others. So as to these K climbers we'll have to accept the reports from those we actually live there. My thoughts were only to suggest some roses that might be hardy in 4 based on my experience in 5a.

Good advice here so far -- I just wanted to add that I bought a few large planters from Home Depot for just $20 each for my pot-pet collection of red HTs. They look like wooden barrels but are made of resin. You'll have to make the drainage holes on the bottom, but they're already marked off. They measure 22 1/2 inches in diameter across the top, about 16" in diameter across the bottom. Here are a couple of mine with roses but before I add annual "fillers and spillers." On the Home Depot website, these planters are for some reason listed twice, with two different pics -- but if you look at the descriptions, you'll see the same sku# for both. There weren't many at a time, so I bought all I could find when I saw them on-sale -- and as such, I ended up with four red, three terra-cotta, and one brown. They're about 15" in diameter across the top. These I'll likely stick in the garage or on my enclosed back porch for Winter, but the larger pots I'll leave out, perhaps mounding Autumn leaves in them and covering with burlap. Be on the lookout for on-sale pots at stores where you wouldn't assume to find them! :-) ~Christopher

Glad your ND is doing well, JJpeace. You're kind to call my replacement rate perseverance, when many times it's just plain forgetfulness (or willful ignorance of the facts). This year for instance, I replaced Crescendo in J&P's $9.99 rose sale when I meant to replace Catalina - Crescendo is doing just fine. Ah well, I have different microclimates in the yard and roses do better in some spots than others. I've had roses die in my ultra-protected sunny zone 6 spot (Remember Me, Oklahoma, Royal Parks) that do quite well in other more shaded or harsher spots of the yard. Most are the reverse, which is why my hot sun spots are getting really crowded. Part of the reason I replaced Blue Moon so often was that I insisted my lavender bed was going to be in part shade to protect the color, but since lavenders are wimpy roses they really need to be in full blazing sun to survive my zone. Live and learn! Patty, I meant to say that your kind offer was welcome but I've about decided that New Dawn is too much of a monster to put the effort into for my yard, and three tries is enough for me. Steve's comment that it would take extra time to establish is that much more of a reason to pass on this one, unless a ND happens to drop into my lap like a free one I got a few years ago. There are other climbers I like more. Glad GT has survived well for you JJ, and I've found that experimenting with grafted or not, or different beds can really make a difference in rose survival. Freak deaths once or twice aren't necessarily enough to put me off a rose (yet). Cynthia

If its fulva, I've left bareroots out unprotected, and still can't kill it, lol. I have always had a couple of hundred daylilies in pots to overwinter. Some daylilies, actually quite a few, have lived in pots since before 2000. I never lost a plant if I put 6-12 inches of leaves over them. The last two winters, I had about 400 in pots, due to closing two large beds. I could not get to covering them, so they stayed totally unprotected in pots, just turned on their side. I didn't lose any the winter of 2017, but last winter was brutal, and I lost about 10 pots. They weren't daylilies that I was going to keep, so It didn't matter to me. I have an over-abundance of maple trees, so if I want to make sure I don't lose plants, I cover the whole area of pots with a foot or more of leaves. But fulva probably doesn't need that much spoiling, lol. If you lose fulva (ditch daylily) or Kwanso (the double variety), I have more than plenty to share.
