Alternatives to a sub-zero refrigerator
Comments (5)Not for everyone and there is no freezer but the quality is impeccable and it is built with commercial components and since the compressor is remote from the fridge, it runs cooler and the kitchen is absolutely silent. My primary fridge and freezer are Perlick drawers under my island Bluestar 60" rangetop which offers the unrivaled convenience of having of having my most used ingredients where I am using them. The Klondike can hold nine gallons of milk on a single shelf and is used for refrigerating leftovers in pans/dishes etc as well as beverages where you want strength and space. I don't believe plastic shelving belongs in a fridge and this is what initially attracted me to this besides the beautiful woodwork. This unit is the proverbial brick outhouse and I love it. The Klondike and Perlick drawers hybrid solution worked best in my situation. Similarly, I have F&P dishwasher drawers flanking either side of my main sink and a Bosch Integra 800 for party cleanup etc since hybrid solutions offer the flexibility and convenience I need. I grew with the integrated side by side freezer/fridge and while the integrated nature of it was nice, the reliability could have been better and the design suffered from use of plastic in the door which I consider a design flaw. Quite simply, given enough and wear, they break, crack and can't hold the same weight. In addition, having all my refridgerative capacity in one unit was a problem since in my mind once you get beyond a certain size kitchen, the kitchen triangle concept gets long in the tooth and is no longer relevant. Designing kitchens around stations makes more sent to me in all but the most constrained kitchens. This makes the idea of concentrating a function in a monolithic form factor outdated to me. Comments (50)Thank you all for the validation :) The full height splash was a decision I worried over. Many of the darker granites that I have seen used as a slab backsplash really darkened the kitchen. I spent a small fortune on tile samples but none were right. The fabricator warned me that even if I had all the colors perfect, the added pattern from any other material may be too busy. The full height splash makes me smile every time I see it. Keeping the stainless splash for function also helps break up that much stone. MrsPete- I considered adding a pendant over the baking center since the wiring was there already, but it was slightly off center and I have a tendency toward OCD for things matching up. That was also one of the areas I retrained myself from adding too many details. Renov8r- here is a quick iPad photo of my hardware. One of the big benefits of working with a custom cabinet maker is he had to rout out the trim for the handles to fit in the narrow drawers....See MoreFinished kitchen- wood cabinets, granite counters
Comments (6)The Elkay sink is gorgeous- slightly sparkly and a great color. There are a couple of small scratches (don't let anyone tell you they don't scratch!) but they are probably only noticeable by me or with a very close inspection. It cleans really well with dish soap and a non-scratch blue Scotch Brite pad. Water does pool a little bit near the front part of the drain....See MoreRecommendations for Counterdepth refrigerators
Comments (24)Take a look at the KitchenAid Black Stainless. It's gorgeous. On display at some high end showrooms now here in LA/OC. I was there yesterday (I'm too trying to decide). They have a counter depth fridge or built-in. The ovens, dishwasher are beautiful.... (I've never had KitchenAid, but toying with that or Bosch). I prefer doing a package so they all match (my preference). Plus you can get rebates, etc. KitchenAid, Bosch or Thermador are my top pics.... But check out the DACOR and JenAire with black inside. So stunning! Search for local showrooms, find one you love and work with a local appliance place. Talk to them. They know what brands they have to make calls on for repairs....
