How Do U Overwinter Zone 5 & Colder Roses?
Comments (9)Terry, I've long since changed to hardy shrub type roses that require little if any winter protection. The few hybrid teas I have, have proven their ability to survive with minimal protection. When my garden consisted of all hybrid teas and floribundas I used paper collars around the base and filled them with shredded leaves, compost, soil, and any other protection I could find ( I had over 500 plants). I also built styrofoam boxes over the beds but that's a bit of overkill unless your roses are planted close together in beds designed for that purpose. I even went so far as to build a large unheated poly house over a large part of my back yard over a number of rose beds. Most important is preparing for winter when you plant your bushes. Bud Unions should be planted 4-6 inches below the soil surface and avoid buying cold tender plants. In our zone, even with winter protection, you'll still experience dieback which will require lots of severe pruning each spring. Climbers will tend to be tall bushes unless you bury the canes. Tree roses will have to be buried or pot planted and moved into an unheated garage or shed each winter. All is not doom and gloom. I grow over 400 roses but have chosen the proper types that survive with only shredded oak leaves at their bases....See Morewhat mini roses have you grown in zone 5 over the winter?
Comments (9)Hi, thanks for the reply -- here is my list of the roses I've ordered (it's a lot!!). Asked the question because I noticed after I ordered them that some say zone 6. I'd like to keep them in the ground if possible, with mulch, etc. Any help on any of these -- how to help them, will be appreciated. Thanks! Comments (39)(Started new thread, should have added to this very helpful one). We find the foot lever is hidden under our standard toe kick right of center, it is easy to use and comfortable on bare feet. In my part of Florida, the cold water tap is rarely colder than 72 degrees, in summer it is closer to 80. I'm happy washing hands and produce and doing all other prep tasks, including light washing, with cold water only. So I saved a few bucks and had the tapmaster 1776 installed, after ascertaining that I could later use parts to convert it to a 1775 if it didn't work out. But it is working out great! I keep the (single) handle all the way over to "cold" and no water flows unless I "tap". If I wanted hot only, I could use the handle to get it. If I wanted a blend, I'd have to engage the tap and adjust the handle. The guy at conserve-a-store was happy to get the friendly and helpful folks from Canada on the phone when I called to inquire, and they all agreed it was worth a try. I'm enjoying this so much I may well need to get them for the cleanup sink and bathrooms....See MoreGrowing Roses in Pots in Colder Zones
Comments (5)I grow several roses in pots. The most successful ones are right up against the house. Including climbers! I do protect them (mound straw around the base of the pot) but I think they get plenty of heat from the house. I do focus on VERY hardy roses for pots (that is, things hardy to at least a zone colder than me, like Felix LeClerc and Cape Diamond). But for example Weeping China Doll, which is, I believe, zone 6, has done very well here for a number of years. The only rose I had luck with in a pot out in the middle of the garden was Frontenac, which is something like zone 3. (But even for that, I mounded the pot with straw). So I guess if were you, I'd consider protecting. But maybe somebody in your zone will offer advice. Good luck!...See Moremmmm12COzone5
