what mini roses have you grown in zone 5 over the winter?

I'm wondering what zone 5 (or colder zones) gardeners have planted in their gardens and had survive over the winter -- i.e., planted in the ground, and mulched. I need a list! Any help would be appreciated... thanks

I live by Peoria, IL and these minis survived -22F temps for a week this past January. I only had oak mulch at their feet and oak leaves that blew in as winter protection.

Thanks so much!! my list is started! I know that busy bee does just fine as does a few others, but wanted to hear from others who have some miniatures. Bought a bunch from noreast and am waiting for them, wanted to know which ones need extra winter protection. Will contact Dan Keil, and thanks again! Deb

Hi Edmmonton, It's really nice of you to start this list to help others. I have 3 John Cabots; 2 of them have grown a lot in the last 2 years. However, they are almost like once bloomers and, they surprisingly get Bspot. I'm wondering if John Davis or Louis Joillet have better rebloom? My MIL has William Baffin. Hers is like a once bloomer as well. Henry Kelsey blooms more. Not the color I'm going for right now but, pretty if you want red. same with Champlain. I had it at my previous home, bloomed all summer. It was a small bush. Orangey/red Cuthbert Grant has a darker red that I like. I just put it in this year, in too much shade, so not much bloom. I think my old neighbor had it and it bloomed all summer. Purple Pavement isn't exactly purple but, I don't think many are. It is very bright kind of magenta. I like it but, it is bright. In some instances that's good. It suckers too. That, for me, is a good thing. Sir Thomas Lipton is a pretty white. It doesn't bloom much for me though. Probably too much shade. Sven has been here 2 summers. It's a cute little bloom machine (I deadhead it). It is kind of lavender. It's blooms are not big but, they are pretty and they fade to near white. So, it can have purple and almost white at the same time. I like it. Quadra is my favorite of my hardy roses. It blooms nonstop. It's flowers are a good size and they are that gorgeous, old rose shape. The color is a pinker red but definitely red. Oh, I also had Hansa at my old house. It is a very pretty purpley color. Kankakee River report: No ice sheet above the Wilmington IL dam. Last winter the slow flowing sheet was breaking over the dam almost 6" thick. Below the dam not even edge ice. Mallard Ducks, Canada Geese and Mute Swans love the available seaweed along the shores. 3 days ago Bald Eagle caught a nice fish and ate it on a high branch across the river. Folks who have summer homes down river at the Interstate 55 bridge so far have not flooded like they had the past 3 years due to lake effect snow melt in NW IN and NE IL. No annual open air ice hockey tournement this year. No ice on scheduled January day OR on the rescheduled day in Feb. Not even open skating. I have only had snow cover maybe 5 nights this winter. I too worry about too early breaking dormancy. But the hostas always survive. WGN weather (Tom Skilling) reports the hottest winter in 56 years in Chicago. So it has been this warm B4. Only a cycle? First, thanks Gary..I didn't realze I had a response on this because I've also been posting on the "antique roses" forum and got a bunch of responses there..I did get a bunch of roses at Sam Kedem. I guess it remains to be seen if any of them make it! Twohuskies has been responding to my posts there and we're in a very similar little microclimate I think. I'll definitely look into the rose you all have suggested. And yes Gary I agree that Sam is great. He has great info on roses and is honest about what he thinks will be hardy. Here is one of my roses that seems to come back again and again that I remember being a Zone 5 but don't remember the name. I had one possible ID on the AR forum as an Austin Rose, "The Dark Lady" I'm not sure if that's right or not..The name doesn't sound familiar to me. This rose is definitely my favorite in my garden and has come for 7 winters with only minimal protection. I've lost LOTS of others since then.. look familiar to anyone?

While a miniature rose can be brought through the winter indoors, it is a difficult process with no guarantee of success. You would probably do better allowing it to go dormant over the winter. One approach is to put them in a garage or other unheated building for the winter. Put them in the darkest corner of the building and make sure they do get some water during the winter. If you wish to pile some mulch around the base, you can do so, but be sure you can still give them water from time to time. Another approach is to bury the container in the garden so most of the plant shows above the ground level. Then pile mulch around the plant several inches deep. Be sure to check from time to time during the winter to make sure the mulch doesn't wash down off the plant. If it does, add more mulch. I make a ring of folded over newspaper, put it around the plant and staple the ends together, then fill that up with mulch. That avoids the washing down problem. This should bring your plant through the winter in good shape.

I've grown hundreds of miniatures this past decade or two - too many to list. It got below -20 F this past winter.
I've found that roses from certain hybridizers tend to be hardier than others. And the really old micro miniatures like Tom Thumb and Cinderella are incredibly hardy.
Anything by Harm Saville is winter hardy - that was important to the Savilles. Wendy White's roses have all proved hardy for me. The roses I have that are Frank Benardella's are also hardy.
But I also have quite a few individual miniature varieties from other hybridizers that have proved quite winter hardy. Pucker Up is quite the monster. Jean Kenneally has proved wonderfully hardy, as well as producing an abundance of nearly perfect blooms.
Post your list and I'll see if I have any of the same ones.

Hi, thanks for the reply -- here is my list of the roses I've ordered (it's a lot!!). Asked the question because I noticed after I ordered them that some say zone 6. I'd like to keep them in the ground if possible, with mulch, etc. Any help on any of these -- how to help them, will be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks -- if you have any that are less winter hardy than others and need more protection -- let me know (and also, what do you do -- extra mulch?) We also get -20 degree weather on a pretty regular basis!!

I've had some of those for a long time.
Cinderella and Sweet Fairy are very very hardy.
Others from your list I've had for years are Chasin Rainbows, Live Wire, Overnight Scentsation, Pacesetter, RalphÃ¯Â¿Â½s Creeper, Red Minimo, Sachet, Scentsational, Irresistible, Mary Marshall, Minnie Pearl, Rose Gilardi, Starina, SunnyDay, Toy Clown, Denver's Dream, Jean Keneally and Jeanne Lajoie.
I could never get Ring of Fire to survive the winter, and I tried several times.
FWIW, I rarely have snow cover in the winter. I've gotten some pretty tender stuff through the winter by putting a foot of maple leaves (they don't matt) on top of the plant. Also, some things have done well by being on the south side of my brick house where stays considerably warmer.

Thanks so much... well, I'll look into doing something w/ Ring of Fire. Bring it in? put in a pot, store in the garage?? I'll figure it out. I thought of maybe putting it in a pot, overwintering in a garage,, but beforehand getting a cutting from it, just in case it doesn't make it...

and good idea w/ the maple leaf mulch! I thought of getting chicken wire and making a cage around the rose (the ones that are more tender...) and piling up the mulch. The purpose of the cage would be to ensure that the mulch stays put.

X-Rated may also need some extra care. For several years I felt it was very hardy - a big, robust bush. However, a couple of years ago I almost lost it over the winter even though it had a mound of chopped oak leaves on it. Fortunately one cane came through and it is now rebuilding itself, but apparently it can have problems under the right winter conditions.

I have around 200 minis and mini flora roses in my yard out of the 400 roses I have. I have been growing minis for years. They are on their own roots so they are hardy. I do not cover mine at all during the winter. Just make sure the plants are not dry going into winter.
