What Zone 5 roses have you had consistent luck with in in Zone 4?

I have a couple roses that come back again and again that are supposed to be Zone 5. Unfortunately, I don't know the names of these roses anymore..when they bloom I will take photos and try to get IDs. I'm particularly interested in climbing roses but would love to hear any stories about Zone 5 designated roses that seem to be hardier..

Tomorrow I plan to make my first trip down to Sam Kedum. I've been very disappointed with the selection of hardy roses I find at the usual places in the

metro. Is this still the best place for roses in the region? I'd be willing to trek further if anyone has ideas...

Birdwing, Gertrude Jekyll, Abraham Darby, Evelyn, The Pilgrim, and Jude the Obscure (all David Austin roses usually listed as zone 5) do very well in my garden without much, if anything, in the way of winter protection. I should also mention one hybrid tea, "Love and Peace," often listed as zone 7 (!), that returns every year, much to my surprise. I'm sure there are many more and I hope you get lots of responses to this. (BTW, I know Sam Kedem and you can rely on him for good advice). GaryStPaul

I'm part of the team that designed the 2012 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. The zones are based on the average of the lowest temperatures each winter for the 30 years ending 2005. Then divided into 5 degree zones. But on the interactive map you can find out exactly what your average low temperature has been based on zip code, so you can know how close to a zone edge you might be. If you are zone 5a, your average low temperature over 30 years could be anywhere from -15 degree F to -20 degree F. But you get the same zone if your average is -15.1 as if it is -19.9. We specifically say that the temperature is based on the average, not the lowest it has ever been or the lowest it ever will be. But like they say about the stock market, past behavior is not a guarantee of future behavior. Of course, the scale of the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map only goes down to about one-quarter mile, so you still have to know the topography of your own garden. My official zone is 7a, but I'm really 6B because I'm surrounded by Rock Creek Park, the largest urban green space in the country. There isn't enough black top and concrete to hold the heat and lots of tree canopy (although less now after the derecho). Some genuses have Societies that are now doing independent testing for cold hardiness. But there is no real convention for using a particular amount of exposure as the basis for rating a variety--single night vs. multiple nights. Also, hardiness really depends on when the cold exposure comes. If the plant has a chance to be conditioned to colder temperatures in a gradual slide, it will be better able to survive than a sudden drop to a cold temperature. There is more scientific convention about the hardiness of agricultural crops, but it is still pretty loose. Mostly I think ornamental plant breeders just grab the hardiness zones on record for the species of a plant and who knows how precise those really were when they were recorded. That's one of the reasons I peruse and often buy from very reputable mail order nurseries like Plant Delights, who do a lot of their own testing of new varieties and tell you what they've found and if it differs from the label given by the breeder. I know this isnÃ¯Â¿Â½t new information for many gardeners, but I thought IÃ¯Â¿Â½d confirm what most of us believed.

I have this red climber which I have no idea what kind it is, got it about 3 or so years ago. It's canes seem to get about 6-8 feet, and it got a beautiful spring flush and now only gets a rose or two during the summer. but the canes are growing like crazy. at first I mistaken it for blaze, since the flowers looked like a blaze, but the canes didn't get as long and the leaves were slightly different. I have done nothing to it to protect it's canes during winter, it is in a southeast corner of the house.in fact it hardly had any winter dieback except at the very tips which I just pruned off in the spring. I wish I knew what kind it was so as to advise whether it would be good in a colder climate. I want to get golden showers and autume sunset but I read they are hardy to zone 6. So I am wondering can I still grow it here with minimal protection? You know just wrap the canes with burlap and a little straw in there to create air pockets. If I ever figure out what kind it is I will tell ya all, that way you know how hardy it is, and resistant to mildew, we had more rain this year than usual, and black spot tolerant, (it has a few spots but the overall bush is healthy looking and medium green.) the canes come out red at first then darken to medium green. What climbers are winter hardy and needs only about 4 or 5 hours sunlight which I can put on the north wall? RR

Hi, thanks for the reply -- here is my list of the roses I've ordered (it's a lot!!). Asked the question because I noticed after I ordered them that some say zone 6. I'd like to keep them in the ground if possible, with mulch, etc. Any help on any of these -- how to help them, will be appreciated. Thanks! Let me ask you what you mean by "take them in"? Are you going to plant them in the ground or in pots? If in the ground, I think you would do more damage by digging them up to take them in. Covering them with several inches of mulch should protect most of them pretty well. If you plan to plant them in pots, then you do need to do some planning for winter. You can either bring the pots into your unheated garage, or you can bury them (pot and all) in the ground to await next spring. There are plenty of discussions about these winter protection methods here on the site so you can get all the details. It is true that some minis are more winter tender than others, but if you do a good job of winter protection they should come through okay.

I'm not sure if they are considered zone 5, but these roses have survived the winter for me. I mound them up with about a foot of loose garden soil in late November. The uncovered canes die and must be pruned in early spring:

Crocus Rose
Carefree Beauty
Carefree Wonder
Earthsong

One rose I do not have, but am always impressed when I see it at the MN Landscape Arboretum is Seafoam. An elegant, healthy, low growing white rose.

I think I need to get Seafoam.

Not sure about the zone for these but I have the following and I do nothing to keep them over winter and they always come back:
Sven (has nice perfume)
Seafoam (lots and lots of white blooms for months)
John Davis (climbs, repeat bloomer)
Lovely Fairy (our favorite. bright pink little flowers for months)
William Baffin (very very vigorous but the rabbits like it)
Pink knock out
Winnepeg Parks (I lost one out of 5 this year, after 3 years)

First, thanks Gary..I didn't realze I had a response on this because I've also been posting on the "antique roses" forum and got a bunch of responses there..I did get a bunch of roses at Sam Kedem. I guess it remains to be seen if any of them make it! Twohuskies has been responding to my posts there and we're in a very similar little microclimate I think.
I'll definitely look into the rose you all have suggested. And yes Gary I agree that Sam is great. He has great info on roses and is honest about what he thinks will be hardy.

Here is one of my roses that seems to come back again and again that I remember being a Zone 5 but don't remember the name. I had one possible ID on the AR forum as an Austin Rose, "The Dark Lady" I'm not sure if that's right or not..The name doesn't sound familiar to me. This rose is definitely my favorite in my garden and has come for 7 winters with only minimal protection. I've lost LOTS of others since then..
