Front yard needs landscaping help

Not sure where to start other than cleaning up a bit. We finally have the time and resources to tackle updating the front of the house and landscaping so will to pay for a good layered design and advice. Thanks

You have quite a grand entry to your home and a pretty sad walkway to get there . I would start with a much wider walk at leaset the width between to 2 center pillars and IMO the same width going to the garage . As for thactul landscpaing the first thing we need is your location.

You have a lovely house and a nice piece of land to work with. So much of landscaping is dependent on where you live -- the weather, soil, local pests, etc. IMO it's important to hire local people who understand local conditions, materials, etc. I suggest you figure out your budget, make a list of priorities (don't forget irrigation) then hire a local landscape designer to come up with a plan. It all adds up fast so get ready for a reality check. You can find design firms in your area, or check with near-by full-service nurseries -- many of them offer affordable landscape design services.

Take your time, go on garden tours, do your homework and talk to several design firms. And have fun! It's going to be beautiful!

This is not a list of plants, but is an organizational layout, involving a reshaping of the bed so as encompass the tree out of the lawn and lead the viewer to the front entrance. The colors serve to differentiate one type of material from the next; they're not suggestions for what colors you should use. That's up to you according to what is available. Eventually, you'll be forced to limb up the tree in order to avoid having it consume the porch. Not insignificant is the undersized landing, narrow steps and lack of cheeckwall, that allows either dirt to be spilled on the steps or that plant material cannot be maintained next to them .... basically a permanent "scab" next to the steps. Widen them and add a cheekwall to solve the problem and make for a nicer entrance experience. I would not enclose the steps or walk with planting. They would only serve to obscure the entrance more. While mentioning the entrance, I will say that the porch post next to the garage seems completely unnecessary and serves to create a narrow passageway ... which is not as good as a wider one. I'd remove it. Also, consider getting beefier posts to replace the remaining ones with.

zone is not enough ... we need a location.. big city name ... do you know your soil??? what direction does the front door face ... are the only shade trees the one on the left .... if there is clear sky above.. im not sure i would even call this part shade .. if this is a winter pic.. do you have a summer pic to see such?? winner winner chicken dinner is done.. more tomorrow ken

How much of the other side of the driveway does your property extend? In my first house I had a similar driveway/walkway. I had the bed go all the way to the driveway and across to the other side. An imaginary line across the driveway is my best description. I always wanted more beds and loved that zone on the garage side that most people seem to forget and not utilize. This also made it easier for me to landscape over time. I cleared the grass out of the new beds and covered in mulch. Then I could choose small sections to fill in over time, not all in one season. The plain mulched areas still looked nice and I would put potted plants in to get an idea of what would work where.

You do NOT want trees right next to your house. First, the roots can cause damage to the foundation. Second, detritus from leaves and twigs will accumulate on your roof. Third, branches can rub on fascia and roofing, and storm damage could bring limbs down on your roof. Finally, you already have a tree in front of this area. There are tall shrubs you could use on the corners, but many are also wide. I can't tell how wide your current bed is, but you may need to widen it. If a shrub is expected to mature at 5' wide, you need a 5' wide bed with the shrub planted 2 & 1/2' from the house. Regardless, a wider bed also allows you room for low edging shrubs or perennials. Remember that all new plants will be small when first planted. Fill in behind and around them with annuals until they get established. Evergreen azaleas have more sun tolerant varieties, but they are only reliably hardy to zone 6, whereas deciduous azalea varieties are hardy to zone 4. Below is how I would redo this bed. It leaves the corner rockwork visible. Try to repeat at least one plant across the front of your home for design continuity; such as the green bush bordered by the edging plant.

As einportlandor implied, location in this case is not important. Few, if any of us here are capable of providing a full landscape design based on a couple of photos and it's irresponsible to suggest that. Hire a qualified local designer.

With the symmetry and formal lines of the house, I would echo those llnes with a brick walk, wide as suggested, and lined with flowering annuals.

Fill in the bare dirt areas around the porch with flowering annuals and plants.

The porch could use some larger plant pots.
