We’re building our first house and I screwed up and asked for a white garage door. I was not thinking about the white on the house being a different white. How hard is it to paint the garage door black now? It’s brand new 😩 we hate it. We have to change it.

It's not hard at all to paint. Any decent painter should be able to do it. Many garage doors come primered and require paint. Instead of painting it black, I would recommend using the same white as your house paint, in a satin finish. I think a large black garage would look too harsh.

I suggest you leave it the color it is, move in for three months and see if it still bothers you.

I like a green-blue suggestion above, but your exterior colors are so neutral that you can choose almost any color you like and it will be another step to make this house "yours". A bright blue door will make a bold statement and will be an eye-catching focal point distracting from poor landscaping. On the porch, you can add an outdoor chair and decorate it with some bright pillows that will match your front door. If there is not enough space for chair you can add an unusually patterned rug. Possible to paint new garage door and porch column?

When the house was re-sided last year, I chose to replace the columns on the porch and the garage door as well. Although the samples appeared to match the rest of the new trim used on the house, the color is off -- distinctly more yellow than white -- and is not attractive. I would like to correct it if possible. The porch column is metal (like the trim coil) and the garage door is vinyl. Is it possible to get a long lasting finish on these surfaces, and 1) what priming needs to be done 2) what paint would you recommend for this purpose?

Good point about the garage doors fading away. When I bought my house they were a contrasting color. Once I painted them the same color as the body of the house, the house seemed much larger. Also, the front porch was more prominent. I think if you do this for your house, then your very lovely front porch will become the focal point. Right now, it competes with the garage doors. So i recommend painting the garage doors a color that is very much like your brick and selecting a color for the front door to make it pop.

Hi, great call outs, thank you! Yes, we will be re-doing the driveway, combo of new concrete around the garage entry and connecting over to walkway leading to front door, the driveway itself will be gravel, which will look more country and fit the surrounding better, there is a ton of driveway that winds around back of the house, that much asphalt will create quite a stark look. The paint is starting to chip in some spots so we need to paint anyway, had originally planned to do board and batten or something along those lines for ourselves, but now will just repaint. If we go white, would you keep all trim, garage doors, etc, white? Would the green door look okay with that, maybe I just paint the door as well while I'm at it? Also, totally agree the door doesn't go with the house, it was on my list to replace! Garage doors will be replaced (they're ancient and have never worked since we've moved in), I'm thinking of barn door style carriage to echo shop doors. Currently we have a weed lawn, and not much of one at that. Our lot is a freeway for wildlife that tromps through all day/night long, in particular the deer and turkey wreak havoc on plants as well as mulch (the turkey love to dig!). But some hardy landscaping, particularly close to the house/walkway in contained small areas (due to drought, as apple_pie_order so correctly pointed out) are in the plans as we get closer to listing.

A black garage door there will look like a gaping black hole on the side of the house. Wait a few months, then decide.

I agree with the above. I would leave it white. I would want a garage door to kind of blend in and disappear as it not really a design element. I would not want it black.

It looks fine. If you paint it black, all the interesting hardware and the windows will disappear. And yes, the whole garage door will stick out like a sore thumb.

I don't have a problem with garage doors painted a dark contrasting color, but they should relate to other elements on the exterior that are also painted in the same color. I don't think you have enough black on the house to make a black garage door "blend" in.

I have dark brown garage doors on an off-white house, but I also have the exact same brown color on the windows, fascia, soffits, lintels over doors/windows and gutters. My front door is also brown, although it is a dark stained wood door.
