Design Dilemma Exterior

Need help with color and style for new cement board siding

Hi- We have a 1960s cape with brick front (we are keeping and not painting) and would love your opinions on style and color for new siding on sides and back of house. the new siding will be a cement board brand called Allura and it is available in lap style as well as shingle

Trim will be updated, too. Thanks!

for your home style I would select clapboard, shingle siding requires a few more architectural details to make it look special. these green tones will compliment your bricks.

The taupe you have goes well with the brick and the gray roof.

However, since the vinyl is really for the sides and the back, with the extensive red brick patio, then a light sage leaning on the gray/taupe side of sage might be warmer looking with the brick back there.

I love log homes! Why aren't you building a log garage? I'm certainly no expert but have you considered painting the garage the same color as the trim on your house? It seems like red siding might look like you were trying to color match the dark red cedar but failed since they're completely different materials. On the other hand, the reds might actually compliment each other. What do I know? You may want to post this on the decorating forum too. It's a very active forum and folks there are very helpful with both interior and exterior design. In fact, if you can post a photo of the garage (or a model) on the decorating forum, someone there will probably Photoshop different colors onto it for you, which is really helpful.

My current home has clapboard-style vinyl siding. The neighbor has the Dutch lap. Over the years I have come to prefer the Dutch lap. I almost had mine replaced, and I would have done the foam reinforced Dutch lap. Straight vinyl clapboard has a tendency to wave. Especially over long expanses. In our neighborhood almost everyone got a new roof in 2008 after a bad hail storm. Those that chose black regret it. It is too stark. These are mostly traditional homes. Go with the charcoal instead.

With the windows and garage doors I would probably go with the same color for the fascia and gutters. I think white siding would look too stark in the gable ends. Something in the taupe family to bridge the dark trim/windows and the lighter brick would look nice. Your brick is so versatile, almost any color (aside from brown/tan since your roof is gray) would work: gray, blue, green, white. There's nothing wrong with what you have now, either. Do you have a sample board from the siding manufacturer you could take a picture of and add to your post so people can see what your options are? I would do siding similar to what you already have, not shingles.

Thank you, everyone! I really appreciate the feedback! I think we are going with SW Pure White for the siding and trim, as there is a lot of white tones in the brick.. And I am partial to a "Nancy Myers" white house aesthetic.. Do you think the trim should be SW Pure White also or a brighter white - and would a brighter/whiter trim even show up outside? Thanks!
