Who lives in the path of the eclipse?
Comments (150)In Sparta, we drove to a convenience store parking lot to use the restroom. It was a little bit after noon, well over an hour before peak eclipse time when we got ready to drive around to find our viewing location. Robert just happened to look up with his eclipse glasses before we got into the vehicle and said, "It's already started!" Sure enough, a little bite was missing from the sun! Even that was exciting. The difference between any smaller percentage and a full eclipse is very significant. You wouldn't think so, but it is. Even at the last minute.....99%.....there is still sunlight providing light, if even a little bit. as the moon moved into that perfect position everything changed. It was shocking, startling, gasp provoking. Can't explain it, really. I shouted to everyone to remove their eclipse glasses; it was an amazing thing to see. The corona around black hole was like a dim night light, providing some illumination to the night sky but not to the ground. Can't really explain it. Everyone was quiet, speaking only in whispers to those closest. It was an intimate moment for this small group we were with, thankfully not a mob nor with an idiot who felt compelled to shoot off fireworks. ;-( But that second when the moon moved into that perfect spot, lots of noisy spontaneous reactions. Funny about the bug spray. The guy who came with his little Yorkie (Rocky, a rescue) went around offering spritzes of his organic repellent after the little nuisances came out in hoards; they were ravenous! It duskish at that time and we needed protection! By the way, Huntsville was in the 97% range, enough to enjoy an interesting experience. We chose to "go big" and drive that picturesque two hours to Sparta. Robert took a couple of quick videos and they are both filled with the sounds of the crickets and cicadas. The difference between a couple of minutes before the total eclipse and the big moment was striking. Day and night. I can't quite explain it....See MoreOT- Anyone building in/near the path of the eclipse?
Comments (22)If I were you, I'd be repeating the phrase "We are close to the edge of totality" as many times as I can. It just sounds so, wow. 'Edge of Totality'- Great name for a song... or a band! Long range weather forecast for us already doesn't look good. We've been unusually cool and rainy for about a week, and the pattern looks to persist....See MoreAnyone traveled to China recently?
Comments (10)Oh, wow, I just went to Wuhan and Beijing last December! I was with a group from my professional organization who gave a talk at one of the universities in Wuhan, so they had arranged guides to be with us every step of the way: pick up, meals, tours, and drop off at the airport. Incredible hospitality and a lot of responsibility. One of the guides was a freshman! Other than a few other Americans or Europeans at the airport, we were the only Americans 99% of the time. So, no, unless you are fluent, and one lady in our group spoke some Mandarin, you will need a guide. After our conference we split up, and most people came back to the U.S. except for the one lady who spent a few days in Shanghai with friends, and then I went to Beijing by myself. Once again, I had a guide for my time there. I stayed at the Grand Hyatt Beijing, and I was able to arrange a private car service through the hotel (Audi with driver) with a concierge to meet me at my gate, wait with me for my luggage, take me to the car and then right to the hotel. I did not want to navigate an international airport where I'd never been and where I didn't speak the language by myself. I think this cost about $100 US but was well worth my peace of mind. I had it a little easier since I was flying within China and didn't have to clear immigration, etc. Then I was checked in at my room when I arrived and didn't even have to stop at the front desk. I chose the Hyatt because of the location to Tiananmen Square and Wangfujing street vendors, and that they would likely have business travelers and a high percent of English-speaking staff, which they did. Then I had a two-day tour through Catherine Lu Tours (Cindy was my guide), and I had a personal guide for those two days. At the end of the tour as part of my package they took me to the airport. I checked out of the hotel and had my bags int the car. So, I had Cindy as a personal guide for the Great Wall and Summer Palace the first day, and then the next day for Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, and Temple of Heaven. She bought all the tickets, etc., so I did not have to deal with any of that. The Hyatt is connected to this underground mall, and I bought some souvenirs and was able to get what I needed. Most of the vendors did not speak English. Wangfujing street is really cool for street food and vendors and since it was just a couple blocks from the hotel I felt OK navigating by myself that first day I arrived. A lot of the street vendors speak some English. They have Didi, which is the Chinese version of Uber that actually took over the Uber China, so it was very easy for all the guides to get us where they needed. Hope this helps!...See MoreIt's Solar Eclipse Day!
Comments (56)100% in little Sparta, TN, a pretty two hour drive from Huntsville, AL. We kept to the back roads the whole time, saw very little eclipse traffic. We enjoyed a spectacular experience with a small contingent of like-minded stranger/friends on a private little knoll; I'll never forget it. It was my second total eclipse and I felt so rewarded to know that my 47 year old memory was vividly accurate! It was a fabulous, memorable experience....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
