Making wood-on-wood slide more easily

central_valley
last month

There's a sliding shelf in my kitchen that's made entirely of wood. The shelf is wood; its edges move in grooves composed of wood parts. When the shelf moves in and out, it's bare wood sliding on bare wood.

I'd like to do something to make the shelf move more easily, but I'm not signing on to build a new, slightly narrower shelf mounted on drawer glides. What about applying polyurethane finish to the bearing surfaces? Is that likely to make things better, or worse?
