Need two new Heat Pumps - comparing Trane / Carrier / Lennox
Comments (3)Sylvia Non coastal location? I prefer a small dealer where owner is actively involved in business, sales and service/repair. Not a fan of Lennox heat pumps. Here is my checklist. Correct sizing is important for comfort and operating cost. there are three equally important components-quality HVAC, the install by dealer, and probably the most overlooked and disregarded is the ductwork system. these are my minimum specs for a new HP system. both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system. 15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF best matching VS air handler full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron) scroll compressor preferred electronic demand defrost preferred thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature staged backup heat strips new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset 10 yr warranty compressor and parts AHRI matching number for the system quoted you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc. any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed. I would look at Trane/AmStd,Rheem/Rudd,Carrier/Bryant. Depending on location and winter climate, I would not purchase a new HP system that did not have electronic demand defrost feature. Electronic demand defrost eliminates unnecessary, nuisance, and expensive defrost calls. Not important though for your location. Trane and it's dealers do think highly of the brand, sometimes a little too much. Look at their sister brand, American Standard that is very similar and usually priced better. Comments (10)Hello, Sounds like it might be a couple of issues. First thing I would inquire about is why the condensing unit is shutting off... Is it off because the system Tstat has been satisfied? Are there any pressure switches on this particular condensing unit? If so, are they opening during operation? If so, either a low or high pressure condition exists and will need to be addressed. One scenario could be moisture remaining in the system that eventually freezes at the TXV. This would eventually restrict the flow of liquid refrigerant, causing low suction pressure. Telltale symptoms include the observation that it "runs fine for a while" then just stops. Or, maybe the unit is going out on a high pressure condition... Think overcharge or non-condensibles in the system. Either way, it sounds to me like the install company needs to spend more time troubleshooting/repairing and less time parts changing. As far as the unit failing to restart, as already mentione above, most definitely sounds like a hard start kit is needed. Common problem with a TXV system. Simple relay and start capacitor will solve that problem. Ken...See MorePricing on Trane units
Comments (4)Before I give you a reply to your question which BTW you will not like, I would like to speak to two issues. Prices both dealer and wholesale between different geographic areas can vary. Some brands are more competitive than others. I would describe Trane brand generally less competitive than others and some Trane dealers have so much business that they don't care what the competition quotes. I would think though that Carolina coastal area is highly competitive. Now to new construction. It s generally known that GCs and HVAC dealer subs have a higher markup than on replacement systems installs. Homeowners lock in to their GC and HVAC sub and they tend to take advantage of a less competitive situation. Not always true, but generally true. To your question. I think it is an unfair question and out of line. The horse is out of the gate. Pricing on base parameters along with equipment upgrades should have been known before you signed on the dotted line. You were quoted low end Trane furnace/AC as the base. What you had installed was a high end var speed HP system. I think you should be less concerned about wholesale cost and dealer markup than what the dealer is charging you. And this should have been known a long time ago. I have no idea what your base cost is. A better question to ask is whether the upgrade to the high end system is in line or over the top and excessive. If Trane saw a dealer post wholesale costs, I suspect they would make it very difficult for that dealer to do future business. In fact, I would say your question is a bit unethical. Perhaps others will disagree and have a different opinion. Let's see what Ryan has to say. IMO...See More2010 Trane unit not cooling leaking (sorry id duplicate post)
Comments (33)I was just happy to hear I was not going to be out $500 for a leak they could not detect! The thing is the middle section of the unit sitting above the air filter and below what looks like some sort of big tank. Looking head on I think it looks like a 3D letter 'M" covered with copper pipes and such. Not sure if that . They said it may take a few weeks to get the part in and scheduled for replacement and its a 4 hour job. Hopefully the recharge lasts that long. I do not know if this is a reasonable wait or not. I may call the main office...I don't think these guys have anything to do with ordering the parts etc. They were very young and to be honest I was concerned if they had the experience to find the leak...apparently they did!...See MoreKara M
