just went down and checked...fan running unit still dripping into floor drain...not as bad underneath filter area I think. I noticed what looked like a removable piece of pipe on the drain, removed it and stuck my pipe cleaner down thru it towards the rain...I hear a clunk clunk cluck and the cleaner came out with some gunk on it. I am considering blowing air thru it with my compressor.....could this have been slightly clogged causing the problem? I poured a cup of water in and hear it run thru. Thoughts....

I used my compressor to blow out the drain....in addition to getting my face cleaned with water in elbow...air was coming out drain into floor. Again, do you thing this could have been clogged enough to cause my issue - somehow backing up and wetting filter and leaking inside and preventing house from cooling from 76 to 72? FYI - it was not uncomfortable last night so I can not say when clog occurred..it really just got warm enough for AC today. If so...how long should I let fan only run to try and dry up inside before I set stat again? Should I leave filter out a while if I set stat and monitor...or just see if house temp starts to drop....

Turned unit back on at 1pm....no dripping anymore in the unit...condensation in fllor drain....temp in house not coming down though...yea its hot out but still.....Outdoor unit does not appear to be freezing up....of course running continuously....no idea what to do..if anything...

10 yrs parts and labor? Nice. Wish wife could find paperwork for our 3 yr old unit. Called city and they have no permit record for our house.

well, 10 years if whatever is wrong is covered...I know how that goes...just wish they could get out here...its hot! I gave up and set it on 80...no sense wasting electricity...not cooling...no idea what could be wrong...

A clogged condensate drain could cause the internal pan to overflow and drip on the ground. This is messy, but shouldn't affect cooling. That drain thingy is something you should clean occasionally (as needed). It should have water in it most all the time since air will blow out the drain if there isn't any water in the trap.

I'm surprised your dealer talked to you considering it is a Friday of a holiday weekend.

Outdoor unit will not freeze up when you are cooling. But you should go out and check that both the compressor and fan on top are running. You'll have to listen for the compressor humming. (It doesn't know the words ;-)

the compressor kicks on...I can hear it....the fan speed then kicks up...no cool air though and it never kicks off...at least more airflow but I assume I am running my electric bill up and no cool air to show for it. Yea, holiday weekend but this place made a big deal of having 7 day staff, huge parts inventory etc...

It may be out of Freon. I've had at least 1-2 trane condensers a year now that have died due to Freon leaks in the condenser coil.

Look at the model # on the outdoor unit and post it in here. Then I will consult my magic 8 ball and see what he says.

what air supply temp are you getting?...and you are certain that outside condenser's compressor is kicking on?...as I recall you have a 3 ton XL15i HP?

Dureing all the filter removeing and looking inside for dripping water did you overlook putting all the covers back on and make sure they are fitted up well? Just tought fan might be pulling air from someplace besides through coil. ):

Ill get model numbers.....only thing i took off was filter door...its on right...dont have special tool to measure air tenp from vent...it was not cold....unit is off...fan is on.....bought window unit for bedroom at sams club.....if out of freon wouldnt it have frozen up over the 6 hours or so it ran it yesterday?....il get model nbr soon......if condenser whete how does it leak...hope its covered and in stock..

If it is completely out of Freon how could it make ice? realize the condenser is high side and a leak in the condenser coil and you're flat.

As far a freezing up...this is not my forte..I just recall window units freezing up when I was kid...stupid to try to compare but again not my area. So you think it might be a leak by the coil condencer...is that inside or outside and does that sound like something covered under their warranty - or that should go on a five year old unit?

what air supply temp are you getting?...and you are certain that outside condenser's compressor is kicking on?...as I recall you have a 3 ton XL15i HP?

XL15i - ok. The only reason I think leak in condenser coil is because of what you told my magic eight ball.... the filter was all wet set stat to 72 woke to 76.

cleaned up water from drain + filter wet, may mean ice had formed at some point.

Magic eight ball says "out look fuzzy" I take that to mean the ice melted so there's no evidence.

The condenser coil sits outside in the condenser. The condenser is the HIGH side of the refrigerant system. You get a leak there "any size" and you're flat pretty quick... as in no Freon.

Now if the leak is a pin hole leak in the condenser coil it is possible it could have froze the indoor coil before all the Freon leaked out, but then once all the Freon leaked out... it could produce no more ice, ice then melted and you tried to run the unit and let that compressor cook some more.

Condenser coil under warranty? yes, if the unit was registered. If not registered - no.

Freon under warranty? no, never

Labor? only if you have extended warranty and maybe proof of maintenance visits.

Compressor? yes, if unit was registered. If not registered - no.

Also if you were not the original purchaser of the unit, you only get the base 5 year warranty. 5 years from start up date of the unit... you need paperwork if this unit is 2010 model.

Be sure to let us know the results, I really need to make sure my magic 8 ball is calling things right.

they are here! Just added 6lb Freon to unit. They are looking for leak. If they find it..its covered...if they can not find it...well then I pay a small fortune and repeat the process when it gets worse again....keeping my fingers crossed...

That's a big leak. If they can't find it you should be looking for a new HVAC company.

They found a leak in the indoor coil...said the lower guts of unit in house needs to be replaced. They said sort of bad design...3 different metals used etc. They see it happen at times. He hopes Freon will keep us cool till part can be ordered and installed...could be a couple of weeks or more I guess.... All covered by warranty. Would have been about $2500 otherwise. I m just glad hey found it. I hope the Freon will last till they can get new part. He said the water I saw was from the low Freon and a freeze up.

This is a Trane evap coil?...lower guts need to be replaced?....I think I would want a more detailed explanation...

I was just happy to hear I was not going to be out $500 for a leak they could not detect! The thing is the middle section of the unit sitting above the air filter and below what looks like some sort of big tank. Looking head on I think it looks like a 3D letter 'M" covered with copper pipes and such. Not sure if that . They said it may take a few weeks to get the part in and scheduled for replacement and its a 4 hour job. Hopefully the recharge lasts that long. I do not know if this is a reasonable wait or not. I may call the main office...I don't think these guys have anything to do with ordering the parts etc. They were very young and to be honest I was concerned if they had the experience to find the leak...apparently they did!

Again this is a Trane evap coil/air handler?...I think that wait time is ridiculous and they probably will have to pump more freon in sooner rather than later..

It's an air handler inside... lower guts would be evaporator coil. Ok, so the old faithful magic 8 ball was partly right... just wrong piece. I think the melted ice or lack thereof confused him. Poor guy needs a rest...

FOLLOWUP:

Well the part came in...while I was on vacation out of town! My Dad came over and let them in. He said they left no paperwork....guess I should call about that. He said the part they replaced was large and looked like a letter 'V'. It took over 3 hours. The good news is we returned to a cool house so hopefully the leak is rectified and problem is solved. Sitting here I do notice a whooooooshing sound now and then...it may be coming from the outside unit. I do not recall hearing this is the past. Anything to worry about? I thought they told me all they were doing outside was collecting the Freon...

Turn that "V" upside down and it becomes a letter "A" commonly called an "A coil".

whooshing sound? It could be Freon cycling thru the coil, it could be condensate water going down the drain, it could be air blowing thru the coil. It is hard to define whooshing in text.
