Design Dilemma living room

Living Room Layout Dilemma is paralyzing me!

I am struggling with furniture layout and design elements to update my LR. I have been paralyzed with moving forward because I don't know what to do and am just using furniture from my old house. I have considered installing built-ins around the frame TV (total wall is 154'') and closing up the furthest right window and moving it to the left, closer to the fireplace - the fireplace does work. Not sure how to organize furniture with the fireplace off to the side and next to a sliding glass door to the patio. Thoughts?

What if you put the sofas in an L shape. One facing the fireplace and one with back to the big wall facing the kitchen? Then, put the TV next to the fireplace. Now the TV and fireplace share the job of focal point, the room is better for TV watching and is open to the kitchen. Plus, you can enjoy the view.

I like auntthelma’s suggestion for the L-shape placement of the couch, though I like the current location of the TV. I love the look of a gallery wall that includes the TV, whether or not it is a frame TV. It makes a great focal point full of your own personality.

Thank you! The room will be used for TV viewing mainly and if we have company we would use the room for entertaining. We have a family room with a fireplace the next level down with no room for a TV and in the basement we have my husband's man cave room. This room was the best choice to have another space to watch TV that is no too close to the man cave room. What sold me on this room was the tall ceilings with the long, dramatic curtains. I am just having a hard time with the layout as the windows on the left are not centered and I feel like the couch is cut in half. I also want to move the furniture away from the walls but the room is not really big enough.

This living room is similar to yours......see if all the pieces shown can fit into your room in this configuration...it has large windows and a short wall adjacent to the windows for the TV. Sofas and or sofa and love seat, pair of benches, console for large TV on wall opposite the sofa for ease of viewing....large cocktail table. Another room with possibilities. I think your room is big enough that you can have a sofa and a set of chairs or another sofa and another chair as is show in these rooms.....the important thing is to have your sofa or largest seating piece facing the sofa for ease of viewing.

Thank you so much BeverlyFLADeziner ! The TV is actually going over the fireplace. (Which is between the 2 book shelves. Not sure if that makes a difference in any of your thoughts! But you ideas can still work it seems like, even with the TV over fireplace.

I appreciate the reply! We're actually trying to get away from the southwest feel, but some floor treatments are a good idea... probably will have a good effect when the hard floors go in down the road. I have to agree with you about the shoji screen--this was really a (half-baked) attempt to pull those massive ceilings down and try to complement the upward profile of the kiva fireplace. It's been a struggle making this airy room feel cozy.

Fireplace does not work. Would you be willing to close it up and get rid of it? Will you be getting new furniture? I'd put your money into more functional and better sized seating instead of in to built-ins that will serve no purpose other than decor and to house a TV.

Keep TV in current location but lower it and remove the furniture beneath it. Float a sofa across from it. Add swivel chairs on the side. Get a new rug that is a better size to define this area and that doesn't extend as much towards the fireplace.

Thank you all. I will try moving the furniture around to see how it looks - this sectional is way too big but is a carryover from our old house and there until we figure the room out. I don't want to invest in new furniture until I settle on a layout. I was hoping the built ins would make the space feel cozier because of the double height room. I don't know who thought this layout was workable when they designed it, LOL.

That sure is an odd space to decorate. If you’re not interested in the fireplace, remove it or otherwise render it so you can re-gain that wall space. I removed my never used fireplace and it totally changed the room for the better.

Using BeveryFLADeziner layout look for swivel chairs to accomodate conversation and TV viewing

An arrangement such as Beverly's uses more of the available floor space and makes the fireplace part of the room. Do you use the fireplace? I would get some furniture sliders and move the sectional piece around to simulate a couch.
