I know that. It was just a county dog pound, actually. They don't do any testing. I've been asking around and getting advice. I actually volunteer at our no kill facility and will get advice. Lots of resources available, they just will cost me $$. Her former owner lost her home, had to move in w/ friends who were not allowed to have animals.....hid the dog at a friend's house who put the dog outside. It ran away & was picked up twice. Owner finally just surrendered the dog. Such a sad story and she's 9 so I knew she was going to be put down. She is sweet, and yes, I can get her healthy, and then look for a new home. thanks for all the advice.

Don't worry, it will work out. I have 3 lg dogs and three male cats. The most recent addition, kitten was and still is somewhat skittish with people, but he holds his own with my 90 lb Labradors. Over the years we have adopted cats that just appear on our property. They have always meshed in both with the felines and canines. You cannot rush it though. Sounds like you have the perfect setup, i.e. your cat can explore and escape when he feels threatened or has had enough. We always gate off an area where the dogs can't get to the new addition until everyone is friendly. This last addition (came on the 4th of July) was the most difficult because the middle child cat got his panties in a twist and was downright vile toward the kitten. My daughter was so distraught that it wouldn't workout. I assured her that given time and patience, the two cats would be the best of friends. It actually didn't take as long as I anticipated. About 2 full weeks. Today,I came home from work to find the two snuggled together asleep on my bed. Relax and enjoy watching the dynamic of the pets making friends! Best of luck.

Marry has a good idea!! My next door neighbors have a bunch of dogs,most in their fenced backyard.The one that belongs to their son in law they keep in the house.Everyday when they let him out he'd come over here,and use my yard for his bathroom.I soaked him more than once with the hose,chasing him out of my yard.I told them about the dog(his in laws) as I hardly ever saw the guy that owned the dog. One day I got lucky,i just happened to be out in the kitchen one day when he came out to get in his car.So I had a chat with him. Told him having a dog comes with responsibleities,some of which were keeping it in his own yard,or behind a fence,but he shouldn't be allowed to run loose and do his business in my yard.Told him that I have to go out and pick up behind his dog before my yard guys come,and I wasn't going to do it anymore. I told him how I wet him with the hose,but also told him now that I have told you,my next step will be catching the dog and turning it over to the humane society. His dog hasn't been in my yard since.They tie him up outside in the front yard instead of putting him in the back with the other dogs.If they get caught with him tied up they will get a ticket as that's against the law here as well. Wood expands and contracts with seasonal humidity changes. Site finishing will not stop that expansion or contraction and any finish that covers it will soon develop micro cracks in the finish between the boards. If you don't have AC, or use a humdifier in winter, the expansion and contraction can be pretty dramatic and so can the cracks in the finish. It's why wood floors in older homes usually have gaps between the boards. When they expand, the fibers on the edge become crushed, and at the ebb cycle in the humidity, I've seen some older homes where a quarter would fit in between the planks. Wood floors can stand the occasional water or piddle accident, but they are NOT a good choice where something like that is expected to happen on a regular basis. The best floor for any doggie daycare is porcelain tile with epoxy grout. It's completely waterproof and stain proof. It's what they use in restaurants, and it can stand up to kitchen accidents and pressure washing. If you want something softer underfoot, then look at commercial vinyl tile with a commercial grade acrylic sealer on it that you have a flooring company periodically maintain. That's what's used in most hospitals and other settings where tough wear and a good deal of moisture resistance is needed but something a bit quieter and softer than porcelain is desired. There are lots of people using this in their kitchens in checkerboard patterns and other patterns and it comes in lots of colors. Look at the Armstrong flooring site for pictures and to order samples.
