Growing old roses in cold winter climates

last month

Years ago when I first found this forum (the early 1990's) there were old rose growers from all over North America and from other countries as well. We were all excited to exchange experiences with our little-known old roses. That eagerness to exhange persists, but in recent years the pool of contributers seems to have narrowed. What I read seems to be dominated by warm-winter rose growers.

Foir a long time I did not notice this shift, perhaps because I myself grow my roses in California, and yes, have a lot of Teas here. But I would very much like to hear more from growers of old roses who live in zones 5 and 6, even perhaps zone 4. Once upon a time we had a member who grew a phenominal garden in zone 4. I was always impressed by his efforts and his remarkable results.

I'd like to hear more from growers of old roses who live in zones 5 and 6. What does well for you? What is healthy? What does not, perhaps, require extraordinary efforts to bring through the winter?

Please share your experiences.
