I don’t disagree, and wouldn’t have disagreed when younger, either. An occasional party is fine, and while I do like to crank music I’m very aware of bothering people. Back yard, at the beach, anywhere, keep it to yourself. Wear headphones, they sound better anyway.

You can call the police and report a nuisance -- they typically just give a warning and often it's enough to stop it from occurring again.

Not at this time of day.

Years ago when we lived in an apartment we had loud downstairs neighbors. One day my husband beckoned me into the living room. He had the large speakers face down against the floor and was about to play some classical music - the Tchaikovsky 1812 overture, which includes gunfire. Didn’t have a problem with noise after that.

They want everyone to know how cool they are - or alternately, they WANT to be annoying 🙄

There are some drivers here that have such loud car sound systems you can feel the bass from inside the house - there are also some who make their cars deliberately backfire, and they've done something to their engines to make them super loud. They all go by daily and are so aggravating!

At least those last only a few moments.

I take some satisfaction in knowing they're making themselves deaf.

I just have to shake my head. I don't understand why they want to go deaf. Don't they know it's going to ruin their hearing? Yes it's rude, but it's also affecting them. It's so stupid!!!

I try hard to be a "live and let live" person. But wow do loud noises make me violate that.

An occasional party annoys me but I will suffer through. A persistent problem is not mine to suffer through alone. 😆

For a short while the homeowner next to me (or his roommate) sometimes had the music, particularly the bass, so loud that things inside MY house were vibrating! Our houses are 15-20 ft. apart. It took a couple of tries to get one of them to hear me at the door. I asked him to come outside to experience what I was experiencing - he didn't believe me, but as we were walking across his driveway to get to my porch, he suddenly stopped and stared at his truck - yep, it was visibly shaking! He was convinced, and they kept the volume down after that.

And there is this - another newer neighbor, 2 doors down and across the street, has been waking me up at 6am when he fires up his very loud truck...I'm contemplating printing this off and putting it on his windshield...

Why?

Noise polution, ugh! And so disrespectful.

I hate it too! Got into a bit of a snit with my next door neighbor over loud "music". Well, it wasn't even music, they had some sound cranked up so loud in their friend's car stereo that our entire house was rattling and the dog was scared to death. We were inside in the living room and couldn't believe our ears. It wasn't even music, it was total distortion coming from the car. We waited a while for them to turn it off thinking they were just tinkering with it but it didn't stop. We went outside and yelled for him to turn the music down that our whole house was shaking. He's been mad at me since and that was a couple of years ago. You'd think a 50+ year old man would have more sense! Oh well....

When I was renting across town and working long night shifts, the next door neighbors teen/young adult boys would blast music right by my bedroom window. I slept during the day so it was especially annoying. They would do it out of their car, which was in their driveway that happened to be right next to my window. I asked them several times to please turn it down but they never did. Even when you explain that you're trying to sleep they don't care. Same with fireworks. For two months around the 4th of July, I used to have to suffer through nightly fireworks, way past midnight in my current neighborhood. Working dayshift then, so it was again annoying. Glad I don't have to worry about being overly tired at work anymore, due to inconsiderate people.

Music hobbyists sometimes play music at a higher than background level volume. I play music louder than most people do because often that's necessary to hear all component parts of a recording. Or sometimes I'm practicing with an electric guitar and fiddling with adjustments to achieve a particular tone often requires adding volume. Music at a "background" level bothers me and I never have music playing unless I'm paying close attention and doing nothing other than listening. A low volume setting at such times just doesn't suffice.

There is a good separation between my house and those of my neighbors but I do my best to be considerate. I'm never loud during sleeping or later evening hours. Speakers are always indoors and not outdoors and I always make sure my windows are closed. I try to limit how long the high volume lasts.

It's not every day, not every other day, and sometimes not at all in a week or for several weeks. We've been in this house for over 25 years. It's a quiet neighborhood, no traffic noise at all, so to hear any sound is more than hearing no sound. I've been contacted by a neighbor just once. I'd bought a new guitar amp and was giving it a workout. A neighbor (who was an a-hat in more ways than one just in general anyway) called me and asked me to tell my kids to turn down their music. I informed him my kids weren't home and I was the culprit. I apologized, laughed it off, and turned down the volume setting that I saw was higher than I intended.

As long as we're talking about it, what I find far more common and far more annoying in some neighborhoods (not mine) is barking dogs. Hey folks, train your dogs not to spend their days barking when they're bored and not to bark everytime they hear something.

The bass really carries. I have been inside my car with music on, not loud, and no thumping bass. I got out of the car and stepped a few feet away, and all I could hear was the bass! It sounded loud! But trust me, in the car it wasn’t.

Barking dogs are my pet peeve. Loud music doesn’t happen often where I live, but barking is frequent and so annoying. My other pet peeve is people playing their music at the beach or a campground or somewhere else in nature, and preventing others from enjoying the sounds of the ocean, leaves rustling, and so on. Also, I’ll add someone conversing loudly on a cell phone in a public space, and having their phone on speaker. Ugh.

Eld, i agree. We live in a rural area on acreage and cannot even see our neighbors. Until recently we seldom heard a peep in the evenings. Then someone moved close by and had a barking dog they could not control. Daytime didn’t bother us so much, but at night it was if they didn't even hear it. Our house is very well insulated and I would awaken at 1 to 2 in the morning if their dog happened to be spooked by another animal. Thankfully they just moved to accommodate their growing family. Dog is gone.

The other thing that happens as soon as it gets warm is some people who live across a lake about a quarter to half mile away (as the crow flies) start to play loud music. Usually this is on Friday and/or Sat nights. The lake is about 6 acres and is owned by 2 of our neighbors and another individual on another distant road. The offenders live on that road and do not realize how well sound travels across a body of water. One of our neighbors even drove over there once to find out who was generating the music, but they didn’t stop and say anything. If we’re outside, we can hear the thumping bass for sure. Debating about calling the sheriff’s dept about it this year. I think our neighbors will do it as it affects them more than us.

I suppose we should get used to the fact that as more people ’find’ this peaceful little area, we can forget our quiet paradise.

Outside's comments just reminded me that we live surrounded by water here, and sound really carries across it. There's a new-ish high rise resort hotel that went up just across the bay, and we were sitting outside one night when we were blasted by a DJ on a mike and loud, thumping music from their rooftop bar area. It's centrally located to radiate out to all the other surrounding neighborhoods too.

It was apparently a wedding reception. My friend actually called the local cops to complain, but there wasn't anything they could do. Thankfully the sound level went down after 10pm. I think there's an ordinance to that effect.

It sounded like it was right next to us - ugh!

I had a neighbor who played loud music so i stuck my speaker outside andblastedhim back with some Mozart.

Barking dogs drive me nuts. I think the owners are deaf.

Worst was one of those portable basketball nets right outside my house. Kerthunk, crash for hours. It blew over in a windstorm and got demolished. Hope they dont get another.

I am not above politely mentioning noise, at least polite the first time.

Outside Playing, we live on a lake as well; the calmer end, where the water skiers congregate because the water is smoother. We are in a smaller town with 3 colleges/universities. These days, some of the students bring a ski boat to school with them. It's the ski boats with speakers attached to a tow bar above the boat, and a big amp that vibrate our house with their music. (FWIW, it's mostly angry, dirty language rap.) The sound is synced with the motor, so it gets louder when the boat accelerates to get the skier up out of the water. Sometimes they'll just park offshore and swim with the music turned up. At least they leave when the sun goes down.

I feel so sorry for the waterfowl having to endure this. The other eight months of the year are no comparison, sound wise.

A couple of years ago, DH and I were watching a movie after supper when we started hearing ”thump thump thump”. We figured it was an event at the nearby golf club. It was pretty loud, just the bass, and after a good half hour of it rattling the windows I looked on our neighborhood Fb group to see a couple of people had already asked about it. One reply was that someone had called the police! and they had gone to the school a long block from our house. And that really got people riled up. ”The kids can’t have a party? all this time with covid and they finally have an event and people don’t like that? what’s wrong with people” etc. But the thing is, one, if you don’t have grade school kids, how would you know, and two, just the same, your party’s bass music shouldn’t enter my home (especially if we weren’t invited to the party!)

I really wish you could just ask a band or the dj to just turn down the bass.

I have to just about stifle a laugh and then shake my head - when a car will pull up near me at an intersection and I'm feeling the vibration of their bass through my feet and my hands on the wheel. I understand enjoying their music, but what must that be doing to their hearing that they are eventually going to find diminishing....

I try to be really respectful of neighbors and people around me and not impose my music choices on them. I'm really annoyed at music outdoors. When I'm outdoors I want to hear the birds, wildlife, wind in the trees, anything but someone else's favorite tunes. I don't like music on a boat, a park unless a concert is taking place, anyplace one would go to enjoy nature.

We're lucky here. The neighbor below us has apologized a couple of times for now-out-of-high-school boys (2) having friends over who have stayed late. Not a problem, very little wakes me from sleep even though their home is directly below our bedroom.

Just a handful of times in the last 10 years I've heard a little classical music coming from the single doctor next doors windows. And that's only if I'm in my back yard, its subtle, certainly not worth mentioning to him.

I feel badly for people who live with shared walls and irresponsible rude neighbors. I've even called a halt to contractors playing music as they work outside my home. My dollar, my rules.

I once lived on floors 2 and 3, with a pianist on floor 1. She tended to practice at night, and I could not hear her as long as I was up. But as soon as I put my head on a pillow, on the sofa on Floor 2 or on my bed on floor 3, I could. it’s the vibrations. One day I asked if she could refrain from practicing after 11pm, and she obliged.

DS plays an electronic keyboard on his vintage apartment building. He plays with headphones on, but the key movement still produces a vibration! His downstairs neighbor actually asked him to stop playing the drums! He doesn’t have drums, but figured out the problem. He put a padded rug under the keyboard and plays more gently, before 9pm.

Barking dogs are annoying. There is one cattycorner to my backyard and he is a Great Pyrenees and barks in the night, early morning and throughout the day. It's not constant but enough that it's annoying as heck. I can't go out in the backyard or even open my back door without him barking at me. I tried talking to him to get him used to me being in my own yard but it hasn't done any good. He can also see me from the side yard and barks if I tend to my side yard garden too. He has several other dogs that live with him, but none of the others bark, ever. I don't even know what they look like because he has my full attention.

Kaths, at my former house with small adjoining back yards, there lived a couple who had two collies. I've met few dogs I couldn't make friends with, but the larger and older of their two just seemed to hate me. Treats didnt do it, softly talking to him didn't do it, his owner even brought him over and held him while I approached him, made sure he understood I was 'one of the good guys' and I couldn't make any headway with that dog. Not only would he bark at me, he'd come to the fence as close as he could get to where I might be working and growl. I could not have a conversation outside with our other elderly neighbor. More than once when let out his front door (fronts were not fenced), that dog ran me up on my own porch.

Wife left. Left him, left the dogs. He would leave his back door open so they could come in and out at will all day long. I put a hose within easy reach and began spraying him when he'd bark at me. He'd run inside then and leave me alone.

Neighbor came home one afternoon and found a damp dog. He told me he'd raced through the house looking for the plumbing problem, then decided it had been me. I freely admitted to hosing down his dog - just the one, the other behaved decently.

Ex wife came back, but not to stay, only to pick up the dogs and they didn't return.

Animals normally like and respond to me, I never did figure out the issue with that one dog.

Simple, they want to feel the music, but because of the poor reproduction of their audio equipment along with the poor acoustics of their room the volume must be turned way up to feel it. If you've ever been to a philharmonic orchestra hall engineered well for the best acoustics you may understand what i"m talking about. If you've never had the experience I'd recommend putting it on your bucket list to really understand.

In a typical living room not much of the initial sound waves reverberate off the windows, walls, floor and ceiling and what does return has distorted frequencies unlike the original wave or amplitude so they crank up the volume. All the walls, floor, and ceiling will function as a speaker and reproduce a poor replication of the original waves and emit them outside the room. Windows are extremely good at amplifying the sound waves to the outside. This is what you here, windows and walls turned into really crappy speakers.

Low frequencies (base) are the easiest to leave a confined space and broadcasted outside the room, and in most cases base will be louder outside then inside the house, so again they crank up the volume.

OMG someone is playing mariachi music full volume now. These people who feel the need to play their loud horrible music sure know how to spoil others weekend. And no offense to anyone who likes loud mariachi music.

I love mariachi music, but just like other music, not so loud, please!

And the irony is the more loudly people play music, the more they damage their hearing, and the more they need to turn up the volume...

Music at a volume that's painful or uncomfortable is up too high.

With care and judgement and making it an occasional rather than every day practice, some may damage their hearing but many will not.

Moderation in everything.

Passive aggression? Disturbing the peace with loud cars, music, whatever might be one of the activites considered when deciding if a red flag law should be applied. (Individual is denied the right to own a gun.)

Not so passive, IMPO.

Interesting article! We have several cars in our sleepy little neighborhood that are ridiculously loud. You can hear them going up and down the streets making noise. It angers me just to hear them. I had wondered why in the world anyone would want to have a loud car like that! That article pretty much says what I had thought of these people that drive these loud cars. UGH!

raee, that's a bizarre study. A quick check in PubMed finds it's not been cited in any other study. Suggesting, a short raspberry toot from peers in the same field.

My unscientific observation of loud cars has taken place over the years as a subset of my observations of men in large and or raised and or noisy pickup trucks. The trend I've seen is that a male driver's height and possible feelings of inadequacy about the size of his personal equipment can be inversely proportional to the size or noise of the vehicle driven.

The loud engine, backfiring cars here are smaller sports cars like Dodge Chargers, Toyota Celicas, etc.

The big obnoxious trucks usually roll coal and have giant political flags flying.

Loud music can come from a variety of vehicles, and since everyone's on waterfronts, outdoor parties.

There's even a Sunday drum circle at the beach a couple of miles from us that carries all the way to our neighborhood - the sound of distant drumming...

Our flag waving loud big fast truck racing club voted to kick out a guy waving a strange flag. VOTE was 9 to keep him in and ZERO to boot him out. He broke no club laws but a few just didn't like it so he's still in the race.

I don not like loud music, even when I in my 20's I didn't like it.

joann, if you've ever been to a performance of a major symphony or opera company in a proper hall, you would probably find the volume higher than you expect it to be. Why? For a good reason, so that the audience can fully discern and appreciate the various elements that contribute to the totality of the sound.
