Weird wall in bathroom

I have this weird wall in my 1971 hall bathroom that is to the left of an 18" vanity. It juts out from the main wall about 5 inches and is about the same thickness. It currently has an outlet in it, which can be moved to the same wall as the vanity. How thin can I make this wall if I demo and cut it back to be flush with the other wall? It's not load bearing, it's just an odd partition. Ideally, I would like it to be about 2" less thick so I can fit a 20" vanity. Gas wall heater will be removed soon.

Are you sure it's not thicker because of a plumbing vent or something inside it?

It is not the worst thing ever. I will say though it is the one thing my parents would change about their house. Theirs is upstairs on an upstairs hallway but it still bugs them. That being said, we have one in our house too! It could not be avoided as we were trying to fit a bath into a particular space and it needed to have two doors (shares with a bedroom and playroom so one is in the bedroom and one is in the hall). The hall door is the one that opens onto the toilet. It is in a dormer with a window above so I think plantation shutters will detract from the toilet aspect. Again, it could not be avoided so we will live with it (and honestly it never really bothered me at my parents either. . . ) Not sure I would give up a foot of counter space in a bath to do away with it though!

It's not supposed to smell! It would be worth $2-300 to me to have it gone so I would call a plumber. I would remove the baseboard and paneling and then call the plumber. They should be able to open up the wall and cut the fitting off , adapt to PVC and get it square with the wall and install an inconspicuous cover. Or maybe even have the plug on the exterior of the house (if the bathroom is on the ground floor which it probably isn't.)

If you have a curb, you will have the cracks develop there, too. and where the walls meet the floor. Anywhere where two different materials meet or where one surface meets another that is in a different direction (known as "change of plane"). My contractor still grouts such places, too. But I did a solid surface shower that he could not do wrong. I am keeping an eye on the place where the floor meets the shower pan, all other places are in dry areas. So there it is just cosmetic. I would guess that water can get behind your tile with those cracks. If properly waterproofed it is fine, but if not, I would get to this as soon as you can. A lot of shower builders do not use waterproofing, even though it is now required. If you do a search on this forum for "Shower waterproof," you can see many discussions about it and learn what is and is not waterproof. (Redguard yes, Durock no, for instance.)

Honestly, you are putting way to much into a space you will have to return back to OG when you move out. As far as the paint goes you get a color match done heck even ask the LL what color it was for touch-ups or something. Im not sure why you need to change it, and you are getting into stuff that is not really "quick rental fix" I could tell you a lot about how to do it but I really am wondering why you would want to put this much into changing 2 lights and a mirror, I think the mirror is really cute, fits the space Now you can buy plain frosted glass to put in place of that glass that is on the current light fixtures, upgrade the light bulbs and that would be a good start.

@palimpsest It shouldn't have anything in it besides the wiring for the oulet, the only way to know for sure would be to open it up. They added a half bath onto the other side on this bathroom and I think this wall is just an after effect of poor planning.

So it's really more like a 24" deep wall on the vanity side, and projects almost 7" past the wall with the heater in it.

I think they did this planning on slightly deeper vanity, (standard is 21" deep cabinet with an overhang on the top) so the corner of the vanity did not stick out past the wall.

What is on the other side of the wall behind the wall heater, I am assuming it's not just empty, that that corner backs up into another space.

5" is a pretty standard wall thickness.

@palimpsest The red area on your drawing is the toilet for the 1/2 bath. The pedestal sink in the 1/2 bath is the crudely drawn red circle and the blue is a closet.

Well, you need a wall between the toilet in the other bathroom and the sink in this one so without rebuilding the entire wall with 2x3 to gain an inch or turning the studs sideways to gain a little more than that and having as skinny wall in between the two, there is really not much to be gained by it. You could probably chop off the part of the wall that projects by the 6 inches, but all that would do is expose the corner of the vanity, which would stick out past the new corner. I don't think that would add enough to be worth the effort.
