OK, so basically there is no magic bullet that I'm just unaware of. So fabrication: The piece that abutts the tile should be level with the tile and the thickness of the tile and thinset. The part that will cover the wood floor will receive the rabbett. If the tile and thinset is roughly 1/2" and the wood is slightly lower (maybe an 1/8th), about how overall thick should I make the piece? 3/4"? Also, would you fasten it with a bead of adhesive then nail and putty? Thanks

Thank you for any ideas you may come up with. I may be adding a tall cabinet to the left of the fridge which would go to the post which is why I drew the arc the way I did. If I didn't put in the tall utility closet I agree the arc should go to the fridge. Some of my other thoughts are just using a wider board of ash to connect the two posts that "sort of" separate the two areas. And then doing the entire kitchen/entry area in tile. Another thought I had was instead of an arc, just tile straight through from the front door to the bottom of the stairs. Finally I thought about using the hardwood as a border around the kitchen and filling in with tile that somehow connects to the entry. Sort of like this: From July 6, 2012 ">

In the grand scheme of things, amortizing the cost of the doors over the next 15-20 years is small potatoes but just trying to see where I can trim some costs.
