Paint Porches & Decks Design Dilemma

Can you identify this stain color?

Trying to determine the stain color used in these photos. We will be staining a new cedar porch and posts. The house is dark grey (similar to the one in this photo) and we like the look of this color stain on the posts, as well as what's shown on the fence. We will test samples but does anyone have an idea of what color this might be? I've found that "cedar" color comes out too yellow, so I think this might be something else. Pecan? Redwood? Appreciate any insight. Thanks!

This is one of the best ways I found to deal with stain - because it is SOOO different from paint. A&C's sample program is amazing. I have to do my own gate before it gets too hot and I was literally just here shopping color: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/samples

Yes, I have been at this off and on for sometime now. As you may recall, I had settled on Champagne Gold but my dh wanted a more cheery yellow since we're having our cabinets repainted in a creamy white. He really doesn't get involved when it comes to decorating but I felt that I would try to find a compromise if at all possible. Thanks so much for the suggestion that you gave. I will check it out.

Not in my opinion. I think about primer as it relates to color specifically like this: Primer's function isn't about the old color. Primer's function is all about the new color. If your new color has a transparent viscosity and requires the boost of a tinted primer to achieve proper opacity, then you need to use a primer. If your new color is robustly opaque, and you buy a top tier grade, then it will achieve proper opacity over any color in two to three full coats. Primer as it relates to the condition of the substrate is a different conversation. Substrate means the wall surface. An example would be if you stripped wallpaper and have residual glue to deal with, then you'd need to prime with GARDZ. Or, if you have chipping flaking paint, then you'd need to prime with Peel-Bond. Or, if you're painting a laminate IKEA bookshelf then you'd need a bonding primer. Etc. An existing dark wall color does not mean you need to prime. Last note about primer is that it does not go on uniform and even. Primer dries to a splotchy final finish. Which loops all this together and makes sense. It's splotchy because it's *more* about surface prep, not necessarily just about color prep.

You may find it much easier to use a stain touch-up pen like those in the attached link. You can make several passes to darken the color, or use different colors in successive layers to "sneak up" on a color. For most scratch repair you only need to come close, not hit an exact match for it to blend in quite well, especially if you apply with a fine tip only in the scratch. If you are seeing gloss you don't have a stain, but rather some kind fo finishing material. I found the comment about stains not being good after a year curious. I have decades-old cans and bottles of oil stains, water-based stains and alcohol-based stains that all seem to do their jobs perfectly adequately. (Most of my woodworking projects are left natural, so a quart of stain last me a long, long time) In what way are they supposed to fail with age? Here is a link that might be useful: scratch pens

an in focus pic of the needles would really help ID ... in your CA... it could be a couple things .. but that opnly matters if you want us to guess about what caused this .... the top is dead ... the rest.. to me.. is overly mature.. and starting to splay ... [not to mention it would have grown into the eave. had the top died] ......it would be a nightmare in my snow load area ... i am sure you dont have to worry about that.. lol .. it has rather too much potential for being planted that close to the house ... i would get rid of it.. no matter what it is ... ken

If it's any help, we did our own Redwood fence/gate. Only pic I could find of it

I also did this Redwood bridge for the koi pond.

as you can see, it's raw redwood w/just the varnish over it. (and you must use a good varnish for any exterior wood. I like these two. Sikkens is also good. some of them come w/a tint to them, but I didn't need it for this

The varnish should have UV properties to it.

Penofin is another one w/stain/sealer together.

You might try that one if you want to change the color. And try using redwood rather than cedar. it should hold up a bit better

The porch deck/posts have already been built in cedar, so can't change that. But it's good to see these different options. Of course we will test them, but hard to know where to start sometimes. I've had such varied experiences with different stains in the past. Also some of the products mentioned here are new to me. I don't see them much in Texas. Will look for them.

Austin. And it's cool that you were able to find that picture through Google search. They used a Benjamin Moore natural transparent stain which makes me think the wood is probably not cedar. But also hard to tell from pictures at times.

Sherwin Williams will match your stain color if you take good close pictures of what you're trying to match and they can do a custom match. Our painting contractor did that with our new unstained window interior trim to match the existing trim elsewhere and the wood floors and you can't tell any difference. Stop trying to do it yourself and hire a painting contractor!

That's a good tip on the custom match. I am definitely working with a painter but I still like to be very involved. I've had such mixed results with wood stain colors in the past. Trying to get it right this time!

We are in the process of staining our cedar posts in the Chestnut stain. Sorry I don't have any photos yet but the color is very close to your photo. Try getting a sample of Chestnut.
