How can I make my kitchen look more contemporary?New canisters?(p
Comments (32)I'll chime in as a fan of contemporary myself, and a not-so-much fan of country. Your kitchen definitely has a country look to it for reasons already posted. The natural color oak cabs unfortunately don't fall into any description of contemporary, but I would expect touching the cabs to be off the table. If you need canisters for practical reasons (e.g. storage), then consider stainless steel. I got a nice set from Costco for not much money, and Crate & Barrel also have nice ones. Your family room has a contemporary look to it (with the exception of the table lamp). If you look at the elements there in comparison to your kitchen, what you see are solid colors, clean lines, and a lack of nicknacks. Look at the window treatments in particular. Solid color valence, and solid color drapes. Also look at the artwork over the fireplace. Dramatic dark frame that matches the color of the fireplace below, complementary colors in the matting, and a repeating dark brown mat towards the inside. So ask yourself, "how do I bring these design themes to my kitchen?" Well, replace the window treatment with a solid color. I would recommend a dramatic color that matches some other elements in the room such as your counters. Vertical pleating such as you have now is more country. No pleating (like your window valence in the family room) or horizontal pleating (like in roman shades) are more contemporary. Although roman shades always have a summer beach house feel for me, but that's probably just me. For the stuff on top of the cabinets, you should replace them with repeating items in solid or repeating colors. For example you could use a dozen clear/colored art glass plates that again match the counters. The key here is to use multiples of the same item in the same or similar colors, whereas currently you have a mix of disparate items (plate, jug, basket, bottle, etc). Anyway you get the idea - repeating elements, repeating colors, simple lines, no clutter. Those things say "contemporary" to me. Good luck and I hope that helps a little....See MoreCurb appeal advice for this house that sort of looks like a duplex
Comments (11)I like the cedar look, but the previous owners just installed those garage doors, they are insulated and pretty nice actually... so we're probably going to just paint them. I've been looking at lots of photos of MCM homes and I would love to incorporate cedar somehow though. Do you think we could incorporate it in the red box below (around the windows and door) to break up the monotony of the vertical siding and stone? Perhaps horizonal cedar top to bottom there (with house numbers to the right of the door)? Also we are planning to replace all of the double hung windows. I was thinking of making big sliders (no grille) out of the ones on the left (those are bedrooms). On the right is just a dining room, so should those become picture windows to match the once in the center of the home? We are also adding windows in the basement for daylight (near the blue square below)....See MoreContemporary Home Curb Appeal Suggestions
Comments (6)Thank you all!! Great feedback and very helpful! Will post pictures without snow. The front walk is asphalt and there is a parking spot there. The house sits on a corner lot and we assume most guests will park in driveway behind house. I had noticed the front deck rails and thought they didn’t fit. I had actually thought of taking them down-and expanding the deck around the side of the house because it is too narrow to be functional. We don’t know if a local variance will prohibit us from making it deeper. I thought if we took the railings down, the space might be more open and we could add planters etc. I agree it is more of a barrier as is. Changing out garage doors, front door and expanding side deck and patio are all on the to do list for Fall! Love the teal door and lighting suggestion! Keep the ideas coming. Thank you!...See MoreGray House - Looking for curb appeal advice
Comments (12)Except for all the pavement and the dominant garage, it isn't bad. I don't think I would make the garage doors any more of a feature than they already are. See about installing a shade garden under that tree. It looks a bit bare. Increase all the lantern lights to be 1/3 of the front door's height for more presence. I would get a local landscape designer involved in rethinking the beds close to the house. I don't see a reason to change the porch since it seems all entertaining outside would happen in your back yard. Are the windows due for replacement? I don't care for the wide white trim that is boxing in the house. Can you go for a shade or two darker like the roof? I always like a house that sits in a wooded area to match the colors of the forest....See Moremojavemaria
