Design Dilemma living room

Living Room Layout

I love out living room (Great Room in pic)

, but I’m struggling with how to best layout the furniture. We recently moved in, so were making due with what we have for now. We have the tv mounted over the fireplace. Thank you!

My brain works a little odd -- let me offer that at the start. I guess I consider room functions first, then assign a subset of the area to achieve it. Any shape can include a (visual) square or rectangle to make the placement work. I can't move my fireplace or the flat TV, so if I get bored with a layout I draw the shape of the room and place the squares/rectangles differently to help with furniture placement. Last year I replaced a sofa with two chairs and that one part of the room became good for conversation and a perfect spot for reading by the fire. Reading this, it sounds weird. :\ My problem is I tend to incorporate the whole space rather than breaking it down into pieces. The drawing helps me focus and shows what can or can;t be done.

justgottabme: Yes! excellent plan! The Tv needs to be in that corner next to the fireplace -- either mounted on the wall or sitting on a console or cabinet. Having a cabinet in that spot would anchor that whole corner. And more excellent ideas above too! Love the idea of bookshelves in each of the corners -- perhaps just try basic Ikea Billy shelving -- or other build-it-yourself shelves (try stores like Targer or Walmart)-- just to see if that plan will work for you? Or look for vintage shelving or bookcases on your local Craigs List! Swivel chairs can be found -- check your local Craigs List! But for now -- once you move the TV -- try placing one sofa facing the fireplace -- and another one facing the window -- forming the classic L-shape.

Neither inspo photo looks good. Sorry. I would give UP the fire, before I'd use the corner and most everyone who has tried it would tell you the same thing. Put a fire and smaller tv in this FORMAL space that will become the DEAD space.......unless it has a tv. Treat it as the escape space for you and hubby. Then just face the fact that a honkin" tv and console alongside a corner hearth......? Is basically a REVERSE of all the corner TELEVISIONS that were ripped out of bult-ins that surrounded center fire boxes, twenty five years ago. And a regret waiting to happen. Failing that? Build a SEE THROUGH and give up a totally open area behind your island, dividing great room space from kitchen. . Two feet deep, and five feet wide. Fire view both sides. Or adjust your front elevation left of entry door, center a fire, and windows on BOTH sides. Which means anything is better than the corner. Scale it down......and a lovely view from a centered bump /window on front elevation Use the loooooooog wall for the honkin black hole : ) even add a small tv above fire on kitchen side. Now THAT is honesty in living lol!. TV everywhere anyone may want to be.

Thank you all for the great suggestions! i love the raised platform idea, Cathy! The play area was a temporary set up, but your suggestion is a great separate seating arrangement, right by the windows to get some late afternoon sun! Rinked, thank you again for the various suggestions! I will look into sconces. the TV is a temporary set up (we will move it to the basement and keep the fireplace. The opposite wall has in built shelving so nothing really can be mounted there. good call on moving the liquor/bar area. i also liked that you switched up the two armchairs to be on the north side - it seems to fill up that area nicely. do you think i can/should add a sideboard/credenza/buffet anywhere in the living room? Some follow ups: we are planning to get rid of the grey chaise/couch and get a regular 3-seater sofa. do you recommend we stay with the cream/beige color scheme or perhaps try a green/chartreuse color or another gem tone or cognac-colored leather? will that go well with the two beige mid-century armchairs? we plan to buy a low square heavy coffee table to replace the current one. similarly, can i get away with not doing a cream/beige carpet? im worried about maintenance. lastly, do folks here think i need two separate seating sections in the living room given the size/length? id prefer not to since the raised platform is already a separate seating area. maybe by moving the two mid century armchairs, that would do enough to fill up the space. PS: eventually, we’ll do a full electric overhaul and add ceiling lights too!

A good conversation area is about 12’ x 12’. So 4 solid steps if you just want to walk it and you are average size. So group the seating area so everyone’s butt is on the side of a 12 x 12 square, and they can all see the tv.

Here are some suggestions prior to knowing about the babies. Just posting them so you can see the ideas. The furniture placement is like Beverly's but has four swivel chairs and a 3 to 4 seater sofa.

Here are some pictures of the rendition with the little ones in mind. Lots of storage in the media cabinet, in the couch table (baskets), additional baskets for toys and the console against the window for more storage, a basket with blankets and extra pillows. The TV is a 60" TV. The couch is 7' away from the TV. There is a large mirror over the fireplace and a large piece of art over the love seat. We also hung curtains. Please know, regarding the furniture, that only the furniture placement is being suggested not the style or colors. We do suggest that the TV go on the wall to the left of the fireplace and a picture or mirror over the fireplace. There is also an entry table with a mirror over it in the stairway nook.
