Is it OK to mix stained molding and painted molding in same room?

We knocked down the wall halfway between our kitchen and dining room. The kitchen will be more modern looking with darker wood color cabinets while the dining room maintains a cherry wood molding, wainscoting, and built-in hutch. I really loved the stained wood look, but some friends are suggesting painting all of it to make the two rooms flow better. My husband said we could keep the wainscoting and hutch as is and paint the molding on top. I am not convinced that it would look right to have some of the wood painted and some of it stained. Wouldn't it be better to keep them all stained or all painted? Not mixed?
