Maximizing bathroom storage/vanity style - thoughts? Pics
Comments (10)Talley sue - of course you have a heat pipe, you're in NYC! LOL! Mine was rusted, peeling and thoroughly disgusting when I first moved in, so when I decided to paint the bathroom, I scraped all that nasty paint (and God knows what else) off with steel wool and then spray painted the pipe with heatproof paint. It has held up reasonably well, as you can see - this was 5 years ago. However, I hate the way it looks and I hate the fact that I occasionally bump against it when getting out of the shower (I've burned my unmentionables more than once, ouch!), so it needs to be covered. It's the only source of heat for the bathroom but our building is so overheated that I doubt it will bother me to have it covered/insulated. However, I don't know what my contractor has in mind - possibly just a sheet metal sleeve - that's one of the things we need to discuss. I love the idea of building a cabinet around it, but I'm not sure what I could store that close to a heat source. As for the vanity, I am considering white - I just wasn't sure how white would look against all that white tile. I haven't decided what color to paint the walls yet because I haven't decided on the mosaic accent, but it will likely have just about any blue or green imaginable in it so painting the vanity to match/coordinate should be a snap. There's just something I love about dark wood, though, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it if I didn't think it looked funny with the floor. I haven't ordered the floor tile, so I'm not married to the wood-look porcelain, but I also haven't seen any other floor tiles that really grab me. If you have any better suggestions for floor tiles that would coordinate with white subways, let me know!...See Morehelp with bathroom/bedroom/closet layout
Comments (16)Hopefully whoever is drawing your plans can help with the code stuff. There are some here that are good with that stuff. I'm not one of them, but I have picked up some stuff reading here. I think if you prefer the style where the closet is accessed through the bath, then I would definitely try for a door to the toilet. I would keep it in the footprint of the old hallway as you drew, but nudge the bottom wall down even with the bedroom wall to get 60 inches. Leave the shower as is. Consider having the door open into the bedroom so it doesn't interfere with the WC door, or consider a pocket door. You could also use lateral hinges, and that opens the option of designing the door to blend with the wall for a hidden room look. I think you should reconfigure the closet a bit too. Only 12 inches between hanging rows will almost certainly not be enough to allow access to the back half of the rows. I'd guess you might get away with it for shallow rows, but I think 48 inch rows will need more space. Since narrow doorways are 24 inches, I'd guess that would be a decent minimum, but 30-36 would probably be more comfortable. I really haven't read much about closets though. Hopefully someone with some insight will be able to comment. Those windows make things interesting! I sense you are having the same issues I did trying to design around them, though I think it can be done....See MoreSmall bathroom from scratch - layout help needed
Comments (6)I'd like to see the vanity across from the toilet. That way people using the toilet can immediately wash their hands. If you need to split it in two for multiple person simultaneous use move the shower separate. That would also give you the possibility of a bigger shower. And yes, a pocket door to separate the two spaces. It's all going to feel very tight and small. This is almost what I removed during my remodel of my master bath to make one large room. You're blocking off any light from the window near the toilet to the other space. When I took those walls down the light now floods the entire bathroom and is a huge improvement....See MoreHelp with bathroom/closet layout in remodel
Comments (12)@anj_p this is a remodel and im trying not to go too crazy otherwise i love your idea of flipping the master/kids wings! good point on toilet - existing walls are all plaster and incredibly soundproof but this new one wont be so going to make sure to raise that question! im torn on reach in closet - its what they have now, but it feels like being able to shut a door would be nice? were also used to using dressers so maybe a nice furniture piece could be a ckmpromise? going to think about that! totally agree on master bath and Im frustrated our architect hasnt suggested it. the window makes a large shower there awkward but we dont hse a tub! thanks for taking the time tk look and give advice!...See Moremshutterbug
