Sons bedroom overhaul
Hi all! This group has been so helpful.
We are planning an overhaul of both kids rooms as surprises. My son’s room currently has his bed and toys everywhere. Please ignore the mess. We have a playroom but he has asked to move his Lego to his room as he is getting older and loves spending time in his room (he’s 10). He has also asked for a small table or desk in his room for colouring, building, etc. he’s very creative. We’re going to put a large wrap on one wall of an airplane blueprint. I’m looking for furniture and layout advice. Would love to add a rug. He’d love to display his Lego builds. The room isn’t huge. It has a great built in closet. Thanks so much!!!

3 months agoChoose some bedding you know he'll love. Then choose paint and maybe you could do a mural on 1 wall. A rug for kids sitting on floor & beanbag chair(s)

3 months agoWith such a statement wall, plus all the things he will have in the room, I’d keep the bedding solid like the bed just showing on the left in this photo. Too much pattern can feel chaotic in a small space.

Comments (9)Hello Susan, Greg here, I am one of the ceiling fan experts at Hansen Wholesale. I have been selling ceiling fans for nearly 30 years now and as a test, I put the Minka Aire Concept II in my daughters bedroom, and the Emerson Curva Sky in my small home office. Both rooms are about 10 x 10. They are both 3 blade flush mount fans that are quite similar in style and price range. I prefer the Emerson Curva Sky because it is a bit less heavy looking and runs quieter due to the blade design. It also comes with a 6 speed controller compared to the 3 speeds of the Minka fan. It is also in the same price range. So, I prefer the Emerson fan over the Minka fan. Emerson has been making ceiling fans since 1895, Minka Aire is a recent company about 20 years old now. Both are good brands, but I prefer Emerson for the longevity. I used the 44" fans in these rooms, but if your room is any bigger than 10 x 10 you should use the 52" versions since they move a lot more air. Both versions were upgraded this year to include an LED light and have an "L" in the model number. The previous year's models have a Halogen light. Comments (11)Thing is, I'm no expert, but I think a lot of kids really love themed decorating. I hate it too, for me, but when I was ten I would have been in heaven to have a themed room. I think navy walls could be really cool for a young boy. Comments (9)Thank you, I’m actually going to consider painting the top half of the wall a lighter shade, but may do this over the Easter half term. I work in a school and I’m back on Tuesday 😕, I guess my arts and crafts home projects will be on the back burner for a while. The pictures above have actually inspired me, I can definitely use some of the ideas. For now I’m going to buy some canvases and go for a dove grey shade, then place them on the wall which seems to be the most problematic for me. My son is not really fussed, but when I compare it to my daughter’s room ( of the same colour) the difference is very noticeable. She loves art and had already created artwork for her walls. 3 months agolast modified: 3 months agoI’d measure the two larger walls and try bed under the window to see how much useable space can be taken advantage of. You could also create an on line room planner with room’s dimensions/structural components to test ideas. Head to Ikea and provide those dimensions to a consultant. Explain his needs: a surface for lego building/storage, arts/crafts, which can double time as a desk. The right configuration can accommodate his changing needs.
Regarding a rug, wait to see the size needed based on furniture size and location. Decor wise, again wait and base on furniture selected/wall mural and with him being ten, he may have some preferences.- PRO

13 days agoIf the bed can fit another way, we might suggest trying it. Perhaps in the middle of the window? If not, then leave it where it is and look at adding a desk, shelves, or even a built-in shelf around the bed for storage.
