Please take this in the best spirit I can offer- I hear a lot of "I" and nothing about him. Does he care? If not, just do it. If so, give him a decision or two over his own space, if he's over 10. I'm a mom- been there, done that!

Can we see the bedding? You mentioned the furniture is dark, what color is it? And yes, what does HE want?

It's a surprise for when he comes home from camp. He loves sports, all sports but lacrosse, football and baseball, hence the sports theme comforter. I just saw an old post where a mom was asking a similar question and one of the responses was to paint the walls navy. I thought that was interesting and a good idea.

We are dealing with water damage on the ceiling which prompted the redesign. His furniture is dark wood - we will change the comforter and the fan to include a light fixture. He's a huge UofM fan, so I've been searching for Michigan football stadium mural wallpaper to put on the long wall across from his bed. The door in the picture is to the closet. TIA for your help and ideas.

Sorry, but I hate themed decorating. Such as fish for bathrooms, chickens/kitchens. I would go more neutral on theme. Maybe just get a large poster for wall that can be changed. Looks like a very nice room. I think the curtains are neutral enough for most colors.

Thing is, I'm no expert, but I think a lot of kids really love themed decorating. I hate it too, for me, but when I was ten I would have been in heaven to have a themed room. I think navy walls could be really cool for a young boy. And I wouldn't worry about him finding it too dark, either -- can't tell you how many perfectly normal civilised houses I've seen in my time where the boy child's room was painted black, obviously by his choice.

Keep the themed items to stuff that can easily be changed out. Kids tastes change rapidly, especially around this age. Sheets, wall decor etc.- those can be sports themed. But a whole wall mural? That would be overkill IMO.

With that dark furniture, navy would make the room look like a cave. I like the current blue, but without seeing the bedding it's hard. A nice gray would work well probably.

My son is 13 and I will be redoing his room, per his request, to resemble the guest room I just finished last year. He wants is to be "relaxing." He loves Bansky so I'm going to incorporate a Bansky decal as well. Consider vinyl decals, see if someone on Etsy will create a custom one for you. Easily moved and changed. I'm using the site "walls need love too." Good luck.

Great ideas All! Thank you. The comforters Kathryn P posted are the comforters I've been looking at (thx!) and the idea of a vinyl decal makes much more sense than a mural, thanks Ann (6B/7A in MD)! Will post an update as we move along. Any ideas where I can find a themed fan with lighting? The electrician was supposed to install hi-hats but determined the plaster ceiling made it too difficult.
