Comments (11)I have sleep apnea and am using a CPAP machine. Most doctors aren't versed in sleep medicine, however, a pulminologist is. A pulminologist is trained to read sleep study data and determine the proper therapeutic levels. There are a number of variations available. The treatment depends on the specific problems causing obstruction and their location. There are three types of sleep apnea, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea, mixed sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder in which complete or partial obstruction of the airway during sleep causes loud snoring, oxyhemoglobin desaturations and frequent arousals. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by repetitive upper airway obstruction during sleep as a result of narrowing of the respiratory passages. Central sleep apnea is a sleep breathing disorder that occurs when the brain fails to send the appropriate signals to the breathing muscles to initiate respirations. Conditions that can cause central sleep apnea include bulbar poliomyelitis, encephalitis affecting the brainstem, and neurodegenerative illnesses. A sleep test, called polysomnography is done to diagnose sleep apnea. Confirmation of the diagnosis requires making measurements while the person sleeps. There are different types of machines - some that have automatically adjustable air pressure or air pressures that are different when you breathe in than when you breathe out. There are also APAP or AutoPAP or AutoCPAP machines. These machines fine tune the amount of pressure delivered to the patient to the minimum required to maintain an unobstructed airway on a breath-by-breath basis by measuring the resistance in the patient's breathing, thereby giving the patient the precise pressure required at a given moment and avoiding the compromise of fixed pressure. There are also bBi-level pressure devices. You may or may not need humidification whether it be heated or passive. Some people need the ramp feature, others don't. Some people need to use a chin strap, others don't. There are also a variety of masks - all based on a theraputic determination. There are full face masks, nasal pillows, masks that just cover the nose, etc. The point of all of this is that there are way too many variables to monkey around and guess at what "might" work. CPAP therapy involves more than just strapping on a mask and experimenting. Different types of sleep apnea require a different course of treatment and the only definitive way to determine what one needs is to have a sleep study. Randomly guessing or experimenting and getting it wrong can be just as deadly as not using CPAP once it has been properly diagnosed. A diabetic would no sooner experiment with how much insulin they need by "trial & error." CPAP therapy should be viewed the same....See MoreI got a sewing machine from freecycle today
Comments (9)Congratulations on your new machine, Patti!! Hopefully, it'll turn out to be something fairly simple and inexpensive to have repaired. I have a weakness for the older machines--they were so much better made. Silly, but it makes me feel sad to see any at Goodwill or yard sales, because I know if only the 'right' person would come along and buy it, how much it would be appreciated. Instead, there it sits, for sale, probably played with by every child who walks along (as well as a few adults!) :) My best friend got a free serger off freecycle--still in the box, never opened! From a young man. I suspect it may've been his mother's, or maybe he'd just gone through a divorce? The serger worked perfectly. My friend uses it all the time.:) She stays busy knitting and sewing preemie baby things to donate to Parkland hospital in Dallas....See MoreFinally - got hair done today
Comments (11)I have naturally curly hair - almost 63. When I was 5, with curls like Shirley Temple, my cousin with the thin straight hair decided she needed a perm but would only go for a Toni if I went too (her family had money, mine did not - guess who "won"). No hairdresser should have permed my hair - talk about a brillo pad! I have hated going to the hairdresser ever since. I am also hair dryer challenged and diffuser challenged. So I stick my head under the tap to wash it and then add some curl enhancer and that is it. Yet when I go for my colour and cut (yesterday) I always have it blowed straight - by someone who knows how to use a brush and dryer - not just swing a dryer around and then use a flat iron - that will kill your hair. While my hair has always been dry - and very thick - it does look very good when done by a hairdresser - I have to be very careful since my hair can be styled in many ways - 95% of which do not suit me. People always ask me why I curl my hair when it looks better straight! As if....Actually, even if I could use a dryer properly, it would take forever for me to dry my hair. I remember being told that post menopause my hair would start to thin out - well it hasn't. I agree re the smell of perms - I would know immediately if someone even came near me. Now if only I suited any other colour than auburn I would be happy. Red is the devil to maintain - good thing I always wear a hat. It is funny, we always want the hair we don't have. Great that you are happy with your perm - but it is funny that my hair looks just like yours after my tap routine....See More- 2 years agolast modified: 2 years ago
