I finally got my first picture today!

I've had a male and a female since early June, but both have been extremely camera shy. Today, I'm standing there, taking endless shots of a hummer moth, when the male comes by. He was about a foot in front of me, but I was moving oh-so-slow to get the camera positioned.

It's like he didn't even know I was there...

I'm guessing that was shot with a flash which caused the eye to look as it does. Note the white spots reflecting of the fence as well.

Jeff, I'm in Birmingham and we share the same climate. You will need bring it inside on cold nights and days. On those days when the temps are in the 40 and 50s, you can put it outside. On days and nights when the temps drop below 38 degrees, I would bring it inside. The easiest way is to buy a set of hand-trucks. Get the ones with inflatable rubber tires. Load it up and push it outside beside a door where you go in and out every day or at the end of the driveway where you park. Leave it sitting on the hand-trucks. Make it a habit to decide every afternoon if the tree needs to come inside. When you see the tree as you go inside, you will remember to move it if needed. BTW, hand-trucks are one of the best gardening item I ever bought.

Is that a sphinx moth? We have a few of them, but they're yellow and black, like a bumblebee.

Hmmmmm, I thought I had already replied to this thread yesterday. Oh well...

Deb's right; it's the dreaded flash. The pictures were taken at dusk, and rather than risking a worse shot, I opted to leave the flash on. It's bad enough having to fix red eye, but flash eye? Oh brother...

Tony; I've never seen a sphinx moth, well, judging by the pics I had Googled. I believe it's either Hemaris gracilis (Slender Clearwing) or H. thysbe (Hummingbird Clearwing), but leaning towards the gracilis based on the pics I looked at.

I got my FIRST EVER hummer picture last week - but it is so blurry I'd have to tell you what it is! (grin!)

I was taking pictures of flowers and it flew right past my head and drank out of a daylily, I swung and snapped but the camera focused on something in the distance, bummer.

My male is finally loosening up; he's not getting bothered by me being on the deck. I don't think I've ever had such a problem getting good pics. I had plenty the first 3 years, but this year, it's been quite a challenge...

He really likes this fence!

Oh, and thanks for the picture of the hummer moth. I've heard some of you talking about it, but this is the first time I've ever seen one.

Thanks donnas. You can get a free Photobucket account. You simply upload your pictures; I resize the picture
in Photobucket so that it fits the page well (without expanding off to the right). You copy the tag,
as shown in the picture below, directly into this thread.

Here's another hummer shot; I took it at the same feeder at a different angle. I've had the impatiens there since May;
I can't believe I've missed such colorful shots! Too bad it was at dusk; it came out kind of grainy :(

At least I have a second male. He was also perched on the fence (the same spot that my regular frequents)
while my regular male was at the feeder. I was surprised that one didn't chase away the other...

The pics were taken with a digital camera, a Fuji FinePix 3800. It's 3 years old now. I did have it zoomed, but I was relatively close; about 5' away and 2' up. I've got my eye on the Canon digital SLR. It'll probably be another year until I can have one of those; I'm waiting for the price to drop below $600.

I can dream, can't I?!?!?!??!?!
