Can someone explain Winter Sowing to me?
Comments (4)Hello Tom8olvr! I've never told you before, but I LOVE your online name! Winter Sowing is a very simple and penny-pinching method. It works with seeds from Temperate Climates which we sow into vented containers made from recycled items, like milkjugs, soda bottles or take-out containers. We sow the seeds during the season of winter, usually starting with our Solstice Sowing Ceremony and ending about the time you no longer need to wear a jacket and scarf at night to keep warm. But when that happens we roll over into Spring and Summer Sowing--the successes and joy never has to end. WS has been here at GW for about a decade now. It's taken very seriously by Winter Sowers who are very passionate about WSing and sharing the method because they want beginners to experience the same successes that they did. WinterSown.Org is a member of USDA/NAL/AgNIC.Org, freely providing quality information to the public. WinterSown.Org has FAQs, Photos, Free Seeds, and few other things I've tucked away into it--all nice. I'm sure you know me well for my seed distribution programs which I started some years back as a way to get folks to try Winter Sowing, but now that it's established I still give away seeds as a way to help beginners and those in need of seed. I'll paste in the link to the FAQs which are all illustrated and have links to supporting info at other quality sites. I will warn you now, and it's very true, Winter Sowing can be very addicting. Welcome to the Winter Sowing Forum--we're a very friendly group, some folks call us the warm and fuzzy forum, and in general, you can ask just about any gardening-related question, because if we can sprout it with WS then we have to grow it and care for it. There is a WS seed exchange, photo galleries and a convo-pit for off-topic discussions. Comments (7)I would just call the rep you ordered them through to question it. We ordered American Woodmark cabinets for our masterbath remodel & just received them, 7 boxes total. Spacing on the doors of our base cabinets looked off to me, but I learned the doors are adjustable and should be aligned properly during install. So yours could be an easy fix as well. Unfortunately for us, the drawer fronts on all 3 drawer boxes are not equally spaced and the side strips on one of the base cabinet is only slightly sprayed with paint. It seems American Woodmark DOESN'T have any kind of quality control and prefers instead to put the burden of getting the order correct onto it's customers. However, the rep at HD was very responsive to my concerns and is working with American Woodmark to get it all fixed....See MoreCan someone explain pool covers for me?
Comments (7)How many do you need? Probably just one. It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. A solar cover is designed to keep heat gained through the day in the pool at night (prevents cooling off from evaporation). A mesh cover just keeps leaves and stuff out. A safety cover can support the weight of a person, it is to prevent accidents. An auto cover is a solid motorized cover that can be opened or closed at the touch of a button. It doubles as a safety cover. If you're in MI, you'll probably need a solid cover (whether auto or manual) to winterize your pool. Auto covers are much more convenient, but also pricy....See MoreCan somebody explain to me why so many people have left GW under Houzz
Comments (120)People who need to know a particular tree wants to grow over 60 ft. tall where conditions permit are those wanting to plant the same kind where there is room for one about 15 ft. tall. Something that happens a lot, particularly when many appear to think "big tree" = 15 ft. The physical demonstration of genetic programming recorded by those measuring fully developed examples illustrates the inherent character of trees being considered. Doesn't matter if they don't all grow 100 ft. tall everywhere, when even half that would overwhelm the planting site. Or that it might take 50 years for them to get big. It costs thousands of dollars to hire a qualified tree service to remove one big tree in a developed setting, where it can't just be sawed through at the base and allowed to fall where it may. And left to rot. Why ever choose a tree for an inadequate space, when a smaller kind could have been planted instead? Denial that a particular kind does often loom large does not prevent this problem from developing down the road. Plants that burn - or worse - every time there is a sharp winter may not really qualify as landscape staples. Certainly not as the ironclad, fail-proof unchanging purchases probably nearly all non-hobbyists are visualizing at the time they bring landscape plants home and install them. Hence the value of pointing out specific items aren't, in fact totally hardy - as in never damaged by cold. This is why there are hardiness rating systems and hardiness categories like fully hardy, half hardy and so on - people want to know where each plant falls on the spectrum, what to expect....See Moresalonva
