Rug placement delima

Hi,

I am thinking about getting a new rug in our Family Room. The one we currently have is 8X10 and leaves a large portion of the floor not covered. The next size up 9X12 is the perfect width, but there is a protrouding wall on one side of the room (under the stairs) that cannot accomodate the longer length so the rug would be about 2 feet longer on one side of the room. Should I stick with the 8X10 or get the larger rug. Any thoughts are much appreciated

I think the 9 x 12 would work if you put the chair & side table on the opposite side of where it is now. They would sit partially on the longer side of the rug. I looked at your prior post back in 12/19 when you asked about additional seating. That post has additional pics of this room - the other 3 sides we can’t see in this post pics. The extended or longer side of rug would be in the wide entry path from kitchen, right? Looks like plenty of room on that side to put the brown leather chair & its side table over on that side with the chair back to french doors. That’s the longer side of this room, right? The other side is the pathway to get to the stairs which is the reason for the slanted wall, yes?

ETA - it’s easy enough to do a mockup of the rug & new placement for chair. Tape off the new rug size & move the chair & table with front feet positioned on the rug the same amount the sofa front feet will be on the rug. Walk around it & see how the room & walkways feel.

I got rid of kitchen rugs many years ago - they were just one more thing to have to clean, and if you don't clean them, they start looking matted and unsightly. Happy not to have that chore on my list. Any spills on my wood floors are just a quick wipe with a damp sponge, one swipe with a towel to dry, all done in under 60 seconds.

Eld, partly because of the dust but also because i like to be able to push the bed aside at times. My vac has an attachment that could reach under there but rugs seem to hold dust. I like to use a dust mop, or I should say that I like for the cleaning lady to use a dust mop. My bed is really heavy and has an upholstered headboard. I like to push it away from the wall to vacuum the back of the headboard and also the baseboards. Yeonassky, whoever gets out of the other side of the bed gets to step on really cold floor. That part of the floor is over an overhang. If it’s my cat or dog, they could just jump over me. 😉. I am leaning toward a rug that covers the open floor area but does not go under any furniture.

Larger or smaller. With a daybed, usually you see either: 1. rug floating in front, the same width or a bit narrower than the bed or 2. rug underneath, and 24" or more wider on the sides and several feet in front. Measure out with painter's tape. The large rug option will not slide around. You need to add a felt rug pad designed for rug over wood in the proper size. Or you can get a rug that fills the room to within 8-24" of the walls, also with a proper rug pad. If you go with a smaller floating rug, choose a round or irregular shape.

Before I got a rug I would work with the furniture layout so chairs and sofa are set up to enable people to have a conversation (the chairs face off into the window and the other faces the TV) Can you shift the TV a bit so you can have a least one chair floating and facing the couch? It will be hard to make the room feel inviting if it is not set up for natural socializing - (FWIW some small side tables with lamps or floor lamps would also go a long way in making the room inviting as overhead lighting can feel pretty harsh) - I think the rug will be easier once the layout is improved
