Area rug placement and size

I am having a hard time deciding on area rug placement and size in my condo living room space. My end of my couch is up against the wall with the window, otherwise it will cut into the dining/kitchen space. If I were to get a rectangular rug, can it go riight up against the wall so that the leg of the couch is on it? And should the legs of the black chairs also be touching the rug? Or would it be better to do a round rug in this space? I am not planning to get a coffee table but was planning to do an end table and maybe an ottoman. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Reverse chairs and sofa, moving TV to the wall left of the windows. Rug should be 2 feet wider than the sofa, and should be 1/3 to 1/2 of the way under it. Leggy chairs should either sit entirely on or off the rug to feel grounded. This chart might help you decide. Also use painter's tape to tape out the sizes on the floor to find the best one for your situation. Well worth it to move TV connections if needed.

A bit small, but WHO is telling you that you need to hide it under the sofa and furniture? Hand-knotted rugs have to be covered up? I have one 10 x 14 hand-knotted with all the furniture on the rug. Then I have a 9 x 12 hand-knotted with everything (mostly a very large sectional) off the rug except the coffee table. It all works if the rugs are large enough for the space.

That depends on the size of the sofa as well as the other furniture in the room. At first I thought you were saying your sofa is 19x11!! Either all four feet of the sofa or the front two should be comfortably on the rug. If you have chairs, they should be on the rug as well.

I like the new arrangement. It might help to tape out a space for the area rug and measure. It's nice to have the rug go about 1/3 the way under the furniture. An 8x10 may work. Can you post a close up of the fabric on the chair?

So many great comments/advice to come home to! Thank you all very much. Helps a lot- especially since I don't speak French at the moment, so just having some "conversation" in English feels good. I'm gathering that my issue about the rug is really an overall issue regarding the configuration of (possibly) all my furniture? As I'm sure everyone knows pictures are really poor at showing space and it's my own fault and lack of math skills that I'm unable to provide dimensions. I think I found an app that can use the camera to calculate square space- I'll try it. But: I DID try to float the couch in a few spaces to no avail however never facing the window wall- great idea. Just using my tape measure now I can see if I do so, I'll need to move the piano. Yeah, it's a big heavy, smelly, old, but beautiful sounding piano- I'm pleasantly stuck with. The book case is awful, I know, it's my 4yr olds- but great idea for a stand. For sure if I move one piece, I move all- but it's worth a try. It's a bit of a puzzle dealing with the heater, lack of outlets, access to tv, and this massive couch. Question: If I'm forced to stay in this position is the area rug really a bad touch? I've never seen an area rug coming from underneath a couch- between the legs. I can't tell if it's a good rule to break here. Thank you again!

I did try this - the space is 9 ft wide, the couch itself is 3 ft wide and we have a 60 inch tv. It was less than 5 feet between the tv and the couch and it felt way too close. i thought about a different couch but thats not in the cards right now.

Evidently the TV is too large for to work on the side walls and be viewable. What's behind the sofa? Can the TV go to that end of the space or is it open to the kitchen ?

Before I got a rug I would work with the furniture layout so chairs and sofa are set up to enable people to have a conversation (the chairs face off into the window and the other faces the TV) Can you shift the TV a bit so you can have a least one chair floating and facing the couch? It will be hard to make the room feel inviting if it is not set up for natural socializing - (FWIW some small side tables with lamps or floor lamps would also go a long way in making the room inviting as overhead lighting can feel pretty harsh) - I think the rug will be easier once the layout is improved

We might recommend a large enough rug to fit the chairs and sofa on. However you might try the recommended reconfiguration above to see if the seating might work better that way.
