What function do you want the area rug to serve? Soft when you get out of bed on the night stand side, looks, other ?

Good question. Of course I want it to look good, and to feel good under my feet. Ive been living with bare wood floors for years and I want to redecorate this room. I suppose appearance and having it fit the room well are most important. I like to be able to move the bed a little as needed which is why i dont want a rug under it. I also feel like rugs under beds get dusty no matter how often you vacuum.

Mtn, there arent a lot of options for the furniture. I could swap the bed and the dresser but i dont think it would make much difference. If you can see a better arrangement, Im open to that. It is very good John Widdicomb furniture and even though i think its too much furniture for the room, i want to keep the set.

Have you thought about switching the positions of the bed and the nightstand, then moving the dresser down so it's across from the bed, and putting your TV on top of the dresser? That way you could eliminate the TV stand and have fewer pieces of furniture in the room.

I had considerd something similar, Bookwoman. Im thinking of getting a wall hung tv and getting rid of the tv stand. Unfortunately if the dresser is opposite the bed, there isnt much room to get by.

Sorry I don't like any of your options. I would have an area rug bound leaving a border around the room.

Google says borders can be 8-24 inches depending on size of room.

It’s hard to say without seeing the room, but based on the diagram, and that you don’t want any of it under the bed, I think this is the placement I’d want. But I like a lot of softness underfoot.

In terms of moving things around, is the dresser low enough to go under the window that is on the West wall in your plan?

Eld, yes I think that would be ideal in terms of appearance but i dont want the rug to be under the bed.

Jinx, that looks small to me. I wonder id the rug should be anchored under the legs of the dresser, chest and nightstand?

Mtn, unfortunately no, the dresser is a god six inches higher than the windowsill, maybe a bit more.

Assuming the bottom right door is where you enter, Id rather see the bed where the dresser is. Do I understand that the only place the dresser could move to is where the bed is, and that creates a pinchpoint? If so, I'd go with Jinx.

No, bottom right is closet, top right is entrance. i don’t like the idea of walking around the bedvto get to the closet although it would leave a nice space for the rug at the bottom of the bed.

If you only have two options for the bed, I would personally choose as is. I like having a window to see out of. I also don't like my bed just inside the doorway (who knows why, just me). I think Jinx's option would work. I can see the rug anchored under furniture legs if it were a seating area, but I think it would be fine not anchored since it's not. If I were you I'd come up with a "dummy" rug and lay in the space and see how it works (brown craft paper, a sheet folded to size, etc.).

Interesting timing dedtired - I have a potential post rolling around in my head about a bedroom rug that DOES go under the bed.

So given your parameters and working with the arrangement you have (which seems to be the one you prefer, yes?) I'm not sure you can have the other furniture sitting on a large rug. If your floor plan is pretty accurate, you'd have part of the dress on a rug and the left side as you're looking from the bed off - it would be odd. Right now I have 3 x 5 rugs on either side of our bed. They do not go under the nightstands but are pulled back a few inches. There's plenty of room for a soft landing and to leave slippers out of the way so as not to trip in the night. I would have preferred 4 x 6 but it would only have worked on one side of the bed. Runners would work also but they'd have to be short ones - extending past the length of your bed would again (IMO) look odd.

@DLM2000-GW I meant to ask the same thing - about small rugs to either side of bed. Wasn't sure if there is enough room on the side with no nightstand? We don't have a rug in our bedroom and i have thought of a small rug on either side. We don't have extreme cold/long winters plus we have a basement so our floors are not terribly cold. Now you've got me thinking!

I agree about under-the-bed rugs getting dusty. I am weird about rugs. There are some beautiful rugs out there. However, we really love our wood and are not ones to cover much of it with a room size rug. I use smaller rugs more so. However, I have been on the search for a long time for a rug to go under our dining room table. Haven't found the one.

Is there not enough room to put the dresser in the spot the bed and nightstand are currently and put the bed where the dresser is now? with the nightstand where the tv stand is now?

#2. IMO, bedrooms don't count when it comes to having a piece of furniture on the rug. As long as the rug covers most of that space it will look great. If someone sleeps on the side of the bed closer to the wall, get a small runner to keep their feet warm.

I like how Jinx placed the rug but i would go a bit bigger on all four sides.

I thought about runners on either side of the bad but, sniff sniff, the is no one getting out of that side of the bed, at least not on a regular basis ( wink wink).

Yes, i think a slightly larger version of Jinx idea is what will work, eapecially if it is not a faux pas to have it not extend under the furniture.

But getting back on topic. Is the reason why you don't want to have the rug under the bed for cleaning purposes? Because if you get a low pile rug, you can use a stick vacumn to clean under their.

I have been known to use one of those hard plastic floor covers that are used underneath a desk as a dust shield under the bed. It works fairly well for keeping the dust down on a carpet.. For clean up every so often I just run my duster across it.

A plus for me is I do some under the bed storage and the boxes slide out much more easily when they're filled.

For your carpet situation I would want as much coverage as possible in front of all of your furniture. If you go with a carpet on one side perhaps a runner on the other side would satisfy in the case of the mystery guest.

Eld, partly because of the dust but also because i like to be able to push the bed aside at times. My vac has an attachment that could reach under there but rugs seem to hold dust.

I like to use a dust mop, or I should say that I like for the cleaning lady to use a dust mop. My bed is really heavy and has an upholstered headboard. I like to push it away from the wall to vacuum the back of the headboard and also the baseboards.

Yeonassky, whoever gets out of the other side of the bed gets to step on really cold floor. That part of the floor is over an overhang. If it’s my cat or dog, they could just jump over me. 😉. I am leaning toward a rug that covers the open floor area but does not go under any furniture.
