I don't have an app for that but what I use to block calls can block calls from prisons, along with these other types of calls. My phone doesn't even ring. If it's legitimate, they can leave a message and I'm alerted to it. If it's not legitimate and they still leave a message, I just delete the voice mail and then block them.

But…aren’t actual phone calls from correctional facilities collect calls? Meaning you answer your phone and hear a recording; ”this call is from the ABC county jail, Joe Smoe requests you accept this call?” or something like that?

Some states don't allow private party recording of calls without the consent of both. Check what it is in your state.

I just asked my Android phone the question. This was the answer.

"Start a recording from a call ...

1. Open the Phone app
2. Make or receive a call.

3. To record your call, on the ongoing call Screen, tap Record.

4. To stop recording, tap Stop recording."

You could ask your phone the same question. It might be different depending on the make.

I know one very good reason to record a call is when it's about an important medical issue.

And can't you simply say you're recording and obtain consent?

I have a Samsung phone. There is an app already on the phone that you can record calls and in person conversations. I have used this feature for in person....um...discussions with a certain coworker, just in case I need them later. I also used it while talking to the other parties insurance company in my car wreck case, and conversations with my phone/internet company, which is ATT and is notorious for straight out lying to customers.. (Alabama has one party consent recording laws) If you have a Samsung phone search for "voice recording" in your apps.

Carol, yes. How else could it be done? In my state, consent must be given first before recording starts.

It's the same in PA: it's illegal to record a phone call without consent.

In Colorado...One party censent is legal. I can record ANY call legally.

I found a voice recorder app to download free off the Galaxy store. I'll try it....testing it now.

Nope....it works to record ....but NOT during a call. I just read...that I can put the phone on speaker...then I can record the call. That's NOT ideal..

Even in two party consent states like California there are exceptions. Here is one that may apply to the average person. Also note that if you are only recording a conversation for your own use who's going to find out? It's simply an admissibility issue, unless you plan to do some nefarious activity of your own with the recording.

I just checked and my older Samsung doesn't seem to have a recording capacity either.

One final thing — call recording apps don't work with Wi-Fi calling. You'll need to disable it in order for any of these apps to work.

No. I put the phone on speaker...hit record...and it says it can not record during a call.

why are you getting calls from the jail?

inmates can and often do use calling cards they either purchase or are given to them, usually by family members or very close friends so calls from a jail aren't always collect.

i worked for a public defender for many years. i'd get collect calls from the jail every day, sometimes many times and often from the same inmate. if i didn't have anything new to tell him/her, i simply refused the calls.

I don’t know anything about recording calls. I do, however, know this:

Years ago when we were foster parenting, the mother of one of our foster kids was incarcerated. She called us - on the child’s birthday - to talk to him. I answered the call and heard a short series of recorded messages saying the call was coming from this correctional facility, from this inmate, and would I accept the call. It was NOT a collect call and I had to click through several options before she came on the line.

I do not know if all states operate like this for inmate calls.

As it stands I can record ....but NOT a phone call.

Why do you want to bother with recording a call from a jail anyway? Just block it and don't answer it. My spam filter blocks nuisance calls and I can take it a step further and block it. Trying to figure out how to record it means answering it.

What I have learned is some entities are successful intimidating people by harassing phone calls. We need to step back emotionally from them. It's a voice making threats--that often they do not intend or hope to act on. Often if we stay the course, ignore, hold our ground they go away, the issue is resolved and all the emotional upheaval on our part was for not. LET IT GO! A threat is not real until the police come to haul you away!!!!

Suggestion? Block his calls. They immediately go to voicemail. Since he only needs money from you, and you don't need any more work from him. There, recorded and you have averted a call that would be harassing. HUGS!

I'm currently blocking any phone numbers or texts coming from numbers I don't recognize and unfriendly callers. Two more roofs have to be paid for. The gutters have NOT been installed on the last one. The first one went smoothly...no glitches until this....6 weeks after the 2nd one was done. NOW it's a problem.

Nicole, I went down that same rabbithole of trying to record phone calls on my Samsung Galaxy a couple months ago. I even tried downloading apps from the Play Store, but only free ones. None worked for me. Maybe because I was using a wi-fi connection, I don't know.
