I mean, with less than a foot of wall by the door, you can't really fill the wall with bench or anything else! Usually it's good to have all your plans before you build or demo anything, for just these kind of reasons. Of course, you could do some version of your inspiration with a shelf on just one end, occupying a subportion of the wall.

The door had to go there due to brick work on the outside :-) Complicated to explain but it was the best solution.

What are your plans for that entire room? Is that the main area of the kitchen and you're wanting to incorporate a seating area? Or is this room adjacent to the kitchen? More info is needed for you to get good advice.

The drawing above is the entire kitchen. Table has to go on that left side - due to space constraints we will have to have bench seating under the window :-). Still in the design phase for rest of kitchen but basically the area in front of the sliding door is where the table will go no matter what.

The initial design feels heavy on the right side of the room with the island and appliances and cabinets. Wanting to add shallow shelving or something visual to ground the table and window area on the left.

What you need to do is show us the layout of where all the appliances and cabinets are going to go. As Jan M. always says, inches and feet. That will direct where the banquette goes.

Sure you can put a bench under the window, in front of the slider - just don't but it up against the slider wall.

Since it's an exterior wall, you cannot recess anything into that wall.

You could build out the wall 6" to 8" or so around the window to create a recessed look and then install the bench in front of the recess, similar to what it looks like they did in your first picture.

6" would still allow around 5.5" b/w the left wall and the slider trim; 8" would leave 3.5"
