Non-vaulted sure is easier to make seem cozy and contained so I'd personally prefer a non-vaulted family room.

I think kitchen designs that are not vaulted usually work out better.

A vault in the kitchen? I'd avoid the dust catch cabinetry that ensues like plague. Show the floor plan : )

Here’s the plan. The idea would be to remove the bedroom wall and put family room in there. And kitchen to the left in the vaulted space. Just wondering if that be weird since usually its the family room that’s vaulted. This is all because I’m planning a garage to the left of the house

I have no idea why you want a vacuous space with no definition beyond vaults, other than a left side garage . I would suggest you get an architect : ) A real one. You will need the drawings and the permits.

A vaulted kitchen can be quite nice. BTW, I've done my own drawings that sufficed to pull permits many times. It's not brain surgery.

I know they can be lovely. Just saying. If it were adjacent to the non vaulted family room. You’d expect it to be the opposite. But I think it could work with vaulted kitchen and non vaulted family

I owned a house with 20ft ceilings in the livingroom. I would retreat to the 8ft ceiling TV viewing room to watch movies. The temperature was easier to regulate and overall it just felt like it more prepared me for rest and relaxation. I have no problem with a family room being a smaller retreat.

No patricia. I asked about vaulted space in kitchens and family rooms and how you would feel about choosing one or the other.

This is not relevant to requiring architectural drawings. It’s a subjective question, different architects may have different opinions about this as well. There is no correct answer to this one would learn in architecture school. I just was curious in knowing people personal preference opinion.

I think when there are different ceiling heights and styles, the transitions between the rooms are important. The complex transitions in new construction open plans with all sorts of shapes intersecting on the ceilings are often pretty bad.

Notice that the picture that Paul shows ties the cabinets to the ceiling with a soffit. People in these forums hate soffits, almost irrationally so. However they sometimes make sense.
