What do you still have in fresh storage from 2011?
Comments (36)pnbrown has a good point. When ordering sweet potato slips from Sand Hill think of it more as a lottery, not as "I will definitely get these slips because I placed my order". And order as early as possible (think January). They are a small business, growing in a difficult area for successful SP production. They can have complete crop failures (as in almost no SP slips in a bad year). However, it is a GREAT way to try unusual, delicious, do-well-in-Northern-states sweet potatoes. If you are starting with no sweet potatoes, hedge you bets by ordering somewhere else too and dumping the common SP slips if you get the Sand Hill SP. But once you have a variety from Sand Hill it is extremely easy to save a few SPs and start your own slips the next year. I did that and am regularly growing Betty, Maryland 810, Orange Oakleaf, HeartoGold, Pumpkin Yam and Willowleaf. They all do well in my Pennsylvanian garden. Someday, I will have Korean Purple and (sigh) Red Wine Velvet again. By all means, order from Sand Hill! They are an excellent (but with few employees) seed company. Just remember that it will be a slower turn around time for seeds and, for Sweet potato slip, not a guarantee that you will get them. Comments (6)List of ingredients: * 5 shallots (6 oz), coarsely chopped * 1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil * 1 (12-oz) bag fresh or frozen cranberries * 2/3 cup sugar * 1/4 cup cider vinegar * 1 teaspoon minced garlic * 1 teaspoon minced peeled fresh ginger * 1/2 teaspoon salt * 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Oil is the first problem with it. You'd have skip that if you follow the guidelines. With the fresh garlic (also low acid) and the shallots and the fresh ginger the pH of the cranberries and the added vinegar might be enough to compensate but there is no way to know. By comparison, the approved recipe for Cranberry-Orange Relish, which would be even more acidic, still calls for 2 cups of vinegar. (If you reduce it to match the proportions of the 2 recipes it would be approx. 1 cup of vinegar.) And, you would just have to guess at a processing time. Bottom line, it is a cooking recipe, not a canning recipe so it is your choice. Dave...See MoreAre the gnats still bad in your area
Comments (6)Without knowing your exact locations or seeing the "gnats" you're talking about, your problem is hard to determine for sure. Black flies are the little gnats that tend to swarm around your head, bounce off your forehead, crawl in your eyes, ears, nose, and (for some people) bite very hard to feed on your blood. Some folks don't get bitten at all. Some folks have bad reactions to the bite, and others just find them annoying. Pennsylvania DEP operates the largest black fly suppression program in North America. However, even with such a large program, not all areas are covered. Each individual county must resuest to participate in the program. There are, I believe, about 33 counties (out of 67) participating right now. In southeastern PA, I know that Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lehigh, Montgomery, and Philadelphia DO NOT participate in the program. Berks, Bucks, Northampton, and Schuylkill do. Black fly larvae grow in rivers and streams that are fast moving, well oxygenated, and generally clean. The biggest single producer of black flies in PA is the Susquehanna River. Many other large rivers also support black flies in PA. Black flies are often cited as having up to a 30 mile flight range from where they emerge (hence the state run river/stream sprying program). The state calls it a suppression program because there is no feasible way to control or eradicate all the pest black flies (buffalo gnats, gnats, whatever you want to call them); about all they can do is keep the numbers low and hope that keeps most people (residents and tourists) happy. I would suggest contacting your county (try contacting the county office that handles mosquito control) or your regional DEP office if you continue to have problems. Just remember, if your county doesn't participate in the program, the state won't be doing control work there. Program fact sheet: www.dep.state.pa.us/dep/deputate/ watermgt/WSM/Facts/FS1838.PDF Note that the DEP office listing on this sheet is out of date. Check DEP's website for current addresses/phone numbers....See MoreDoes your area still have restrictions?
Comments (35)In NC, we have a statewide mask mandate, gathering limitations, capacity restrictions for retail, restaurants, bars...schools are on a district by district basis. The large district we live in is currently all virtual for HS and middle, and I think elementary is in person but reduced days. Many more rural districts are in person, but everywhere has strict mask, hygiene and distancing measures in place. Honestly, the district puts out cases in the schools weekly, and there have been sporadic cases, but none were transmitted or acquired in the school. I fully support sensical restrictions (I adhere to every guideline, whether required or merely suggested) but it I have read SO many articles from many different sources that closing schools does not prevent spread and it has a severe negative impact on children from lower socioeconomic brackets. We will be paying, as a society, for this disruption in children’s education for a long time to come....See Morecaflowerluver
